Tip from the book “Mastering Sporting Clays” by Don Currie.
“Employing a pre-shot planning process forces you to visualize the targets, develop a target engagement plan, and test your plan by visualizing and moving with the targets in the form of a rehearsal (using your pointing hand).”
From Dean
A consistent pre-shot routine helps improve consistency. Without one, you’re approaching each shot differently, which can lead to inconsistent results.

Tip from the book “Shotgunning in the Automatic Mind – The Guide for Shotgunners and Instructors” by Warren Watson and Mike Wilfley.
“After the shot leaves the gun, there is a period of time before it arrives at the target, which has continued to move. The shotgunner must lead the target by an amount determined by the speed of the target at the breakpoint, the angle of the target to the shooter and the breakpoint, and the distance to the target at the breakpoint.”
From Dean
Shotgun shells slow down fast. This is where rifle and pistol shooters have issues. Because a rifle or pistol bullet has more mass and as such doesn’t slow down nearly as much. So they will shoot at a target that’s crossing and expect it to break.

Tip from the book “Trap Shooting” by D. Lee Braun.
“Your emotions have to be under complete control, to such an extent that if you drop a target you don’t let it worry or unravel you but instead turn calmly to the next target and work on it as though nothing at all had happened.”
From Dean
Too many shooters fixate on a miss, which only leads to more misses. Instead, treat every missed target as a learning opportunity. Decide what you’ll do differently on the next shot—then let the miss go. After the competition go back and work on improving your weaknesses.
