Be Honest: How Many Cues Are Leaning Against Your Wall Right Now? One by the pool table. Two in a corner. One that belongs to somebody who hasn't been to your house in six months. And at least one you're pretty sure nobody is allowed to use.

You can tell a lot about a group of pool players by what happens when somebody scratches on the 8-ball.

Is the game automatically over? Does it depend on whether the 8-ball went in too? What rules are we playing anyway?

Half the battle in a casual game of pool is figuring out whose rules everyone agreed to before the first break.

Every pool player has one.

Maybe it's the long straight-in shot that should be easy but somehow isn't. Maybe it's a cut shot into the corner. Maybe the cue ball is sitting against the rail and suddenly everything you've ever learned about pool disappears.

A new pool table, a killer lighting setup over your current table, a wall-mounted cue rack loaded with new cues, or a comfortable seating area where everyone can hang out between games?

You don't have to be a professional player to notice when a pool table isn't playing quite right. If balls consistently drift toward one side of the table, slow down unexpectedly, or seem to change direction on what should have been a straight shot, the problem may not be your aim.

Pool tables can move out of level over time, especially after being moved or as flooring and a home settle. Even a small difference can affect play.
