Kodiak Bears Football: Moving Forward with 9-Man Football!

Big changes are coming for Kodiak High School Football — and they’re all about building a stronger, safer, and more competitive program for our athletes and community.

Starting next season, the Bears will transition to 9-man football, a move designed to match our current roster size while still offering everything we love about the game: teamwork, strategy, competition, and Kodiak pride.

This shift brings several important benefits:
Player safety first – With fewer players on the field and smaller roster demands, athletes see reduced overuse injuries and more time to rest, recover, and develop their skills.
Increased playing time – More opportunities for every athlete to contribute and grow on the field.
Stronger competition – Competing against schools with similar numbers means closer, more exciting games and the chance to build winning seasons that boost morale and community spirit.
Program growth – This is a great opportunity to rebuild our program’s numbers, strengthen our foundation, and prepare for the day when Kodiak returns to 11-man football once registration numbers rise again.

This is not a step back — it’s a strategic step forward. Our goal is to give our student-athletes the best possible experience, on and off the field, while keeping Kodiak Football strong for years to come.
