We wanted to say thank you so much to all the families and folks who supported us during our attempt to bring these life-saving skills to the island permanently. We tried so hard for three years. Sadly, pool time has become a significant issue. Please get in touch with us if you have questions or want to learn more about survival swimming.
Alaska Otter Babies
Float. Swim. Survive. We teach children to survive in the water should they find themselves alone.

If your child cannot swim, keeping them within sight is not sufficient. Floaties give false information and can foster recklessness. They need to be within your ARMS reach. They are always learning. It’s our job to make sure they are learning the real and true info about this environment that can sn**ch their life in seconds. Life jackets on the pool deck before and after swimming are an excellent way to protect kids from accidental fall ins. During swimming at the pool, hard no!
Your courage to share this may just save a life.

Start your New Year with this fun group swim class! This is the beginning of your baby’s water experience! Infants 4 months to beginning walkers, along with a parent or caregiver, will be introduced to the aquatic environment—splashing, bonding, and making new friends. Enroll at https://akotterbabies.org/
This program is the precursor to swim-float-survive and gets your baby comfortable with the pool environment, our swim instructors, and, of course, the water!
Please know our survival swim classes are full, and there is a waitlist.

Please consider giving to this amazing organization. If not for CAST scholarships several Kodiak nurse, first responder, military/veteran and income-based need families would not be able to receive such valuable life saving skills.

Update the space has been filled. If you are interested, enrollment is still encouraged as you will be added to our waitlist.
Due to an unfortunate family situation, we had a family cancel with two children. Enrollment is now open again for the 2 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. lesson times. This session is from 1/2 to 1/31, 2025.
We have scholarships available for families of teachers, nurses, first responders (fire, police), military/veterans, and income-based needs, reducing the cost to $60 a week (or less) for one-on-one private lessons.
For early walkers to 5 years old, your child will learn to roll from face down in the water to their back and float. Once they can float independently (week 2/3 of the 5 weeks), they move onto the swim-float-swim sequence. They will roll from their float to their bellies and learn to swim, and when they are tired, they roll to their back to a float, then back to a swim until they can reach the pool wall and climb out independently.
These life-saving skills can be the difference in life and death if a child is alone in the water.

Empower your child, ages 6 months (able to roll over) to 4 years, with the skills to survive should they ever get to water alone. Self-rescue skills are a vital layer of protection in an overall approach to water safety, which should also include arms-length supervision, barriers, and knowledge of CPR ❤️.
Enrollment is now open for January 2 to 31, 2025, at https://akotterbabies.org/
90% Discount for military/veterans, emergency service workers (nurse, fire, police), teachers, and children with special needs.
98% Discount for Income-based scholarships.

We need your help with Airfare. Miles or money 😊
We are so excited to invite Nadyne from Georgia to our lovely island in January to train both Kodiak residents Lucy Pryor and Sara Olson to be child aquatic survival instructors.
If you’re able to donate please reach out to us as we would be greatly appreciative!

We are fortunate to have an outside-of-Kodiak organization willing to provide discounts for emergency workers, the military, and children with disabilities.
Infant and Toddler Survival Swim only has 5 participant enrollments available. We are primarily trying to fill the 9:15, 9:45 a.m., and 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. If you've already registered, you can update your enrollment form. Once enrollment is closed, we will begin a waitlist.
Home - Alaska Otter Babies Survival swimming is a comprehensive swimming and aquatic self-rescue instruction. Unlike many of the popular swim programs that teach the Pop-Up Breathing method (children lift head, get a breath, struggle to float), our program emphasizes the Rollback-To-Float method so that children can roll onto...

Ahoy,
January enrollment for survival swimming is now open! There are two sessions: a Little Splashers group class where caregivers are in the water with their little ones and Infant and Toddler Survival Swim one-on-one lessons. If your swimmer has taken survival swim classes previously, you can repeat the swim-float-swim one-on-one lessons or wait until our upcoming Little Fun group class, where children with the skills can play and learn together.
We have moved away from ISR and have chosen the Survival Swim Development Network certification because the approach appears gentler and offers the Little Splashers and Little Fun group classes for children to take a learn-through-play approach. Therefore, the Kodiak ISR website and Facebook will retire, and all communication will be through Alaska Otter Babies https://akotterbabies.org/
Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you in the water.
Kind regards,
Sara and Lucy
