I will always treasure GG Kim’s wisdom. One day at lunch with him, when I told him I was vegetarian, he said, “Even the mighty elephant eats only the tender grasses.”
As he was teaching me Ge-Baek, he told me this story (although a much shorter version):
Aesop's Fables, The North Wind and the Sun

The North Wind and the Sun were high in the sky. As usual, the North Wind was bragging to the Sun.
"Watch me blow away these clouds," he said. "I'm really strong—much stronger than you."
북풍과 태양이 하늘 높이 떠 있었다. 여느 때처럼 북풍이 태양에게 자랑을 하고 있었다.
"내가 바람을 불어서 구름을 날려 보내는 거 잘 봐." 북풍이 말했다. "난 정말 강해, 너보다 훨씬 더 강하지."
He blew hard and all the clouds scattered.
"See?" the North Wind said with a grin. "I'm the strongest one in the sky!"
The Sun smiled. "I'm strong too," she said.
북풍은 세게 입김을 불어서 구름을 다 흩어 버렸다.
"봤지?" 북풍은 씩 웃으며 말했다. "하늘에서 내가 제일 강하다고!"
태양이 미소 지었다. "나도 강해." 태양이 말했다.
"Ha-ha!" The North Wind laughed loudly. "You? Strong? You're always gentle, not strong!"
Just then the Sun spotted a man walking along the road. The man was wearing a warm coat.
"하하!" 북풍은 큰 소리로 웃었다. "네가? 강하다고? 너는 항상 부드럽잖아, 강한 게 아니고!"
바로 그때 태양이 길을 따라 걷고 있는 한 남자를 보았다. 그 남자는 따뜻한 외투를 입고 있었다.
"Let's have a contest," the Sun said. "The one who makes that man remove his coat is the strongest."
"Sure," the North Wind said, laughing again. "That will be easy for me. I'll just blow that coat right off him. Watch this!"
"내기를 하자." 태양이 말했다. "저 남자가 외투를 벗게 만드는 쪽이 가장 강한 거야."
"좋아." 북풍이 또 웃으면서 말했다. "나한텐 아주 쉽지. 내가 저 외투를 그에게서 바로 벗겨 날려 버리겠어. 이걸 보라고!"
The North Wind blew hard. On the road below, dust and leaves flew everywhere.
"Oh!" The man shivered. "What a chilly wind!"
북풍은 세게 바람을 불었다. 아래쪽의 길에서는 먼지와 나뭇잎들이 사방으로 날렸다.
"으!" 남자는 부르르 떨었다. "바람이 무척 차구나!"
"That's odd." The North Wind frowned as the man buttoned up his coat. "The coat is still on him. I'll try again."
The North Wind blew again, this time even harder.
"이상하군." 남자가 외투의 단추를 채우자 북풍이 얼굴을 찌푸렸다. "그가 아직도 외투를 입고 있네. 다시 해 보겠어."
북풍은 다시 바람을 불었는데, 이번에는 훨씬 더 세게 불었다.
But once more, the coat stayed on the man.
"Phew!" By now the North Wind was out of breath and very tired.
"Oh well," the Sun said gently. "I guess it's my turn."
하지만 이번에도 역시 외투는 그대로 남자에게 입혀져 있었다.
"휴!" 이제 북풍은 숨이 차고 매우 지쳤다.
"자 그렇다면," 태양이 부드럽게 말했다. "이제 내 차례인 것 같군."
She moved closer to the man.
"What strange weather," the man said, unbuttoning his coat. "Now it's lovely out!"
The Sun beamed even more brightly.
"Ahh. It's so warm," the man said. "It feels wonderful."
태양은 그 남자 쪽으로 가까이 움직였다.
"이상한 날씨네." 남자는 외투의 단추를 끄르며 말했다. " 이제 밖에 날씨가 아주 좋아!"
태양은 훨씬 더 밝게 빛을 냈다.
"아. 아주 따뜻해." 남자가 말했다. "기분이 아주 좋아."
"Oh no!" the North Wind cried as the man removed his coat.
The Sun smiled. "I guess I won the contest."
"Hmpf!" The North Wind said, taking off.
"안 돼!" 남자가 외투를 벗자 북풍은 울부짖었다.
태양은 미소를 지었다. "내가 내기를 이긴 것 같군."
"쳇!" 북풍이 허둥지둥 떠나면서 말했다.
Below, the man was resting peacefully under a tree. The Sun kept him warm as he slept.
"Poor North Wind," the Sun thought. "Someday he'll realize something. It's often better to be gentle than to blow with great strength."
저 아래에서 그 남자는 나무 밑에서 평화롭게 쉬고 있었다. 그가 잠자는 동안 태양이 그를 따뜻하게 해주었다.
'가엾은 북풍.' 태양은 생각했다. '언젠가 그는 뭔가 깨닫게 되겠지. 센 힘으로 불어대는 것보다 부드럽게 하는 것이 더 효과가 있을 때가 많다는 걸 말이야.'
