Conditioning is our focus today! So that means longer sets!

Relax the neck and shoulders, punch from the core. Try to imagine yourself with a tall, long spine when you’re in guard. Relax the shoulders down and back, no slouching, crown of the head to the ceiling. Try to let the work come from your abs, not arms. Roundhouse- whip the hip over and relax the leg, let it come from your core/glutes. When you land the kick, the hip should be facing the ceiling, flipped all the way over.

Fit Tip!
The changing of the season means that different vegetables and fruits will be in season. Things like winter squash, broccoli, apples, cranberries, sweet potatoes and pomegranate are more available in the fall. Try to eat for the seasons that way you are getting a variety of nutrients in your diet throughout the year.

Core and Technique

Jab/cross- rotate the wrist and extend the arm out in front like it’s shooting down a tube. Straight out and straight back to the face.
Roundhouses- stack the hips. The hip of the kicking leg should stack on top of the opposite hip, with the outside of the kicking leg facing the ceiling.

Fit Tip!
Take a walk for lunch. Chances are it doesn’t take your whole hour long lunch break to eat right? Use the rest of that time wisely, get your blood flowing and move around. Especially in this wonderful fall weather, maybe you can even walk to lunch!

Core

When going for an uppercut, take the elbow to 90 degrees and pull the opposite shoulder back to drive the punching shoulder toward the bag. It should feel like you are doing an oblique crunch when you throw an uppercut.
When you land a roundhouse, your torso should be facing and leaning away from the bag. Start with the step, which will start to rotate your body away, then when the hip whips through, the pivot turns your body to the side. You should never be squared up/facing the bag when you land a RH kick.

Fit TIp!
Aches and pains are part of the process. If you aren’t hurting your body isn’t changing. That being said, there is the right kind of pain and there is the wrong kind of pain. Deep, dull soreness in your muscles is great! It means your body is progressing. Sharp, burning, stabbing or chronic (long-term) pain, or pain in the joints may mean there’s something wrong. If you have a pain that persists longer than a week, or a sharp sudden pain that comes on instantaneously, start by taking some time to rest, if it still persists, see someone like Dr. Scott Fournier.

Technique

Keep elbow at 90 for hooks and uppercuts. For both of these punches, you should strike the bag with the first 2 knuckles and elbows at 90 degrees. Use the twisting of your core and shifting of your weight to bring your body and punch to the bag, rather than extending your arm all the way.
Much like a round house, the standing leg pivots for power on a side kick. Think about the knee lift during the side kick as you loading up, then when you go to stab the bag with your heel, pivot on the opposite foot to strike powerfully. When the kick lands, the heel of the kicking leg should be touching the bag, and the ball of the opposite foot should be the only thing touching the mat.

Fall is here! Take advantage of this great weather and get outside. The sun is one of the best ways to boost your mood and immunity with vitamin D. It should be noted that vitamin D is best absorbed through the skin without sunscreen, however, if you will be exposed to the sun for prolonged periods you should definitely consider a sunscreen.
