Custom Zones – Increasing fitness center usage and satisfaction without doing a full remodel.

Adding a custom zone to your fitness center can be a great way to provide your guests with the latest training options and experiences. For the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, we looked at the latest trends in fitness and products along with the current fitness center layout, equipment and budget. Looking at the unique architecture, including a large, curved wall and semi-private back area, our team set out to create two new separate and unique zones within the fitness center.

To create a new HIIT/Functional Training Zone we started by adding a new oversized motivational mural on the curved wall. Matching the curvature, we then cut a large oval, removed the existing flooring and replaced it with black rubber. New equipment included a Life Fitness SYNRGY360, Keiser TBT, WATERROWER, Octane Fitness MTX and Technogym Skillmill. To finalize and activate the space, we added floor graphics that inspire movement and training.

After adding this suite of higher-intensity products, our thoughts then turned to recovery. The semi-private area provided a perfect location for the new Recovery Zone. We designed and installed a new custom green wall that surrounded two large mirrors providing a relaxing natural environment. For recovery products we added a Hyperice station with two hypervolts, Hyperspheres and Vypers.

Wall graphics can convey movement and energy however, these can be the most complicated in sourcing a correct image to achieve the desired results. Many images, especially older stock images, can seem dated and out of place if not sourced by a skilled designer.
