The Junior Lifeguard Program emphasizes Teamwork, Leadership, and Safety while introducing you
ng people to safe marine and aquatic recreation opportunities. The program is designed to improve young people's physical conditioning, their understanding and respect for the environment, their parents, their peers, and themselves. The Mission of the State Park Junior Lifeguard Program is accomplished by activities such as instruction and practice in open water swimming, paddle boarding, body surfing, body boarding, surfboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, skin diving, and self rescue. Respect for the environment is increased by the understanding gained by daily physical contact with the environment and through lecture and discussion of pertinent marine and aquatic topics. Increased respect for themselves is gained through their personal progress and accomplishments. Further, the Junior Lifeguard Mission embraces opportunities for community involvement and partnerships in school classroom instruction and with community youth programs. The Mission recognizes the necessity of seizing special opportunities to introduce non-traditional user groups to the wonders of marine and aquatic recreation environments. As part of this educational mission, the California State Park Junior Lifeguard Program admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school or in youth program. The Junior Guards had a great day learning how to safely navigate through Crystal Cove’s rocky terrain.
Most of our park is made up of rock and reef terrain formations. This alone can be dangerous for the public and adding the power of the ocean makes it even more so. That is why our lifeguards are skilled highly to make rescues in these dynamic environments and keep the people safe!
