Two eel encounters, two totally different vibes. 🌊

1️⃣ Dragon Moray Eel (Puhi kauila): Vivid orange tiger stripes, leopard spots, signature "horns," and arched jaws packed with needle-sharp teeth. Pure drama in every crevice.

2️⃣ Yellowmargin Moray Eel (Puhi paka): A mottled olive heavyweight with piercing pale eyes and a dark gill patch. That gaping mouth isn’t attitude—it’s just how they breathe!

Nothing beats opening up our inbox to find absolute gold from our divers. 📸✨

Our guests crushed it behind the lens this week. Swipe through to see who came out to say hello on our shore dive:

🐢 A green sea turtle gliding effortlessly through the blue
🦈 A white tip reef shark sleeping in the sand
🐍 A moray eel giving us that classic toothy grin from the reef
🐡 And quite possibly the most photogenic pufferfish we’ve ever seen

Guiding you through these waters is incredible, but seeing the dive through your eyes is something else entirely.

Blink and you’ll miss the master of disguise. 🐙✨

One second it’s just reef and texture, the next it’s shifting colors, moving like liquid, in this case being chased by a goat fish. Easily one of the most mesmerizing encounters on any dive.

Catching a ride in style! 🐢✨

Spotting a Gold Lace Nudibranch is always a treat, but finding one hitched onto the neck of a Hawaiian green sea turtle (honu) is a whole different level of rare.

This stunning sea slug is endemic to Hawaii—meaning the waters around these islands are the only place on Earth it calls home. With its translucent, gelatinous body, intricate geometric gold webbing, and dotted, feathery gills, it looks more like living blown glass than a sea slug. Usually, you’ll catch them grazing quietly on sponges tucked into reef walls and caverns, but this little adventurer decided on first-class transit across the reef.

Nature never runs out of ways to surprise us down here.

Following the massive swell driven by Hurricane Lowell, we finally got back underwater to assess the site—and the landscape has changed forever. Massive concrete pylons that stood anchored for decades were toppled by the sheer energy of the surge, as seen in the videos.

Even more heartbreaking to witness is the damage to the resident cleaning station. Coral heads and structural outcroppings that served as daily gathering spots for turtles, tangs, and wrasses took a big hit, essentially breaking it in half.

Reefs and dive sites are living, dynamic environments. While it’s tough to see a familiar sanctuary upended overnight, marine ecosystems are built on renewal. New crevices have opened, fresh substrate is exposed, and the resident sea life is already beginning to adapt to the new topography. It’s a somber reminder of the raw power of the Pacific—and a new chapter for this site that we’ll be documenting.

You always hear them before you see them. That distinctive clicking and whistling underwater is an instant giveaway.

While exploring the reef just outside first Cathedrals a pod of Hawaiian spinner dolphins cruised right through the site.

First Cathedrals is right outside a shallow bay that they use during the day to rest. Getting to share the water without disturbing their rhythm is always a privilege. Definitely one of those safety-stop memories that stays with you. 🤙🌊

Meet one of Hawaii’s coolest reef locals: Whitley’s Boxfish 🌊✨

Found nowhere else on the planet, this endemic treasure takes "dressing to impress" to a whole new level. In fact, males and females look so completely different that scientists originally thought they were two separate species:

The Male: Electric cobalt blue flanks framed by crisp white stripes and a black, white-spotted top. He’s bold, neon, and impossible to miss.

The Female: A gorgeous golden-brown hue covered in delicate white polka dots with a signature bright white horizontal band along her sides.

Beyond their stunning colorways, they’re shaped like little armored cubes with fins, hovering across the reef like tiny underwater UFOs. Because they're exclusive to Hawaiian waters, healthy coral reefs are crucial to keeping these vibrant jewels thriving.
