A child’s sudden change in behavior deserves the same curiosity as a sudden change in physical health.

New obsessive fears. Repetitive rituals. Severe food restriction. Tics. Separation anxiety. When these appear abruptly, the timeline matters—and PANS/PANDAS may deserve consideration during a thorough evaluation.

Parents often notice the change first. “This is completely different for my child” is a statement worth listening to.

At some point, you stopped being “just the parent”… and became the researcher.

You learned the labs.
You changed the food.
You studied inflammation.
You started understanding the nervous system, sensory processing, the gut, the immune system, and the brain.

Not because you wanted another job.

Because you wanted answers.

When a child is struggling with developmental, behavioral, sensory, or neurological symptoms, it can feel like every specialist is looking at a different piece of the puzzle.

But what happens when those pieces are connected?

The gut may influence the immune system.
Inflammation may influence neurological function.
Sensory processing may affect regulation.
Sleep, nutrition, movement, environment, and nervous-system function may all interact.

That doesn’t mean every symptom has one hidden cause—or that every child needs every test or therapy.

It means the whole child deserves to be considered.

For so many families, the journey becomes less about chasing individual symptoms and more about asking a different question:

“What factors could be contributing to why my child is struggling?”

Keep asking thoughtful questions.
Keep looking for evidence.
Keep measuring progress.

Because sometimes the breakthrough isn’t finding one missing answer.

It’s finally seeing how the pieces may fit together.

Save this for the parent who has a notebook full of questions. Share it with someone who has become a researcher for their child.

“Picky eater” may describe what you see at the table, but it doesn’t tell you why eating is hard.

For some children, digestive discomfort, chewing or swallowing difficulties, and sensory processing deserve a closer look; a clinician may also consider motor development and neurological function.

If your child eats only a few foods, dreads mealtimes, or struggles with growth, ask your pediatrician about a feeding evaluation.

The goal is to understand what your child is experiencing—and help them feel safer and more comfortable with food.

What if the conversation about mood, skin, and behavior started with what’s on the plate?

A diet heavy in refined carbs and low in fiber may affect the gut microbiome, which communicates with the immune system and brain.

And there’s a separate question worth asking: how are the grains in our pantry stored?

Some molds can produce ochratoxin A, a mycotoxin found in contaminated grain products.

17 teaspoons of added sugar a day. That was the average for U.S. youth in the CDC’s 2017–2018 data—nearly three times the American Heart Association’s daily guideline for children ages 2–18.

How much added sugar is hiding in the drinks and snacks your child reaches for every day?

WHAT IF YOUR CHILD’S SYMPTOMS ARE TELLING YOU TO LOOK DEEPER?

Motor tics. Sudden behavior changes. Anxiety. OCD-like behaviors. Skin rashes. Cognitive or speech concerns. Even seizures.

These symptoms can have many causes—but one potential contributor that may be overlooked is exposure to ochratoxin A.

Ochratoxin A is not a fungus itself. It is a mycotoxin produced by certain Aspergillus and Penicillium molds. Exposure may occur through water-damaged environments or contaminated foods, including improperly stored rice, grains, cereals, flour, coffee, cocoa, dried fruit, and spices.

Research suggests ochratoxin A can contribute to oxidative stress, immune activation, and inflammation—but exposure alone does not prove that it caused a child’s symptoms or diagnose autism, PANS, OCD, or any neurological condition.

The message is to TEST. MEASURE. AND LOOK BEYOND THE LABEL.

BEDWETTING ISN’T ALWAYS “JUST A PHASE.”

Sometimes the bladder isn’t the whole story.

A retained Spinal Galant reflex, poor core stability, altered body awareness/proprioception, or—in select cases—neuroimmune conditions such as PANS/PANDAS may be pieces worth investigating.

Instead of only asking, “How do we stop the bedwetting?”
Ask: “WHY is this still happening?”

When a child’s body keeps sending a signal, look deeper—not with blame, but with curiosity.

📌 Save this for later.
