Boats are both out. First time since 1997 that I have had to pull the boats prior to October or even into November. Water levels are at what I believe to historic lows for this time of year. Lets hop the management of the dam, and mother nature cooperate to get our lake levels back up ...

I was out earlier this week, trying something new. I was thinking the walleye should be associating with deeper structure, now that the water has hit nearly 80 at the surface. I wasn't wrong. Only one fish in the hour or so I was out, but a nice 18 inch eye.

Hit these two, and had hopes for more. But nothing else for 30 minutes so we split. Marked a couple nice warm water spots spited a few nice fish shallow. Good relaxing few hours on the water. Thanks Nathaniel Fullerton!

Things are definitely behind. I did some scouting Saturday early, and then went out again in the afternoon. Crappies are staying deeper and pretty tight lipped. With water surface temps ranging from the mid 50s to low 60s and the warm sun from the last day and a half I expect things to ramp up quickly. Warmer water over old weeds or new green weeds will hold gills and suspended crappies as well as some bass on the edges. With the south wind the Marsh didn’t heat up but the bass will get more active there soon. Anecdotally I’d say the bass numbers aren’t what they have been. Didn’t see many beds or moving fish in the Marsh . Time will tell.

Tomorrow is opening day. As a conservational fisherman it is a bit of a conflict for me. So many species active and hitting. Ill be honest now is the time to let them go to spawn. Ill keep some crappies but I try to be selective and let the females go. Lets all get out and enjoy the great opener, but remember, our fishing future is in our hands. let the Spawners go so we can be sure our kids have fish to catch too.

April showers bring May flowers right? What about snow? Hopefully we are done with the snow now and can get the water temperatures warming up. Believe it or not the lily pads are starting to come up in shallow muddy bottom areas. It won’t be long before the warm days bring crappies and other panfish shallow. I haven’t been out but mom sure there’s a few who have already seen early panfish success. The boat goes in next week. I’m looking forward to the early crappies! See you out there. I’m planning to do some scouting and weather permitting catching the last week in April. Let me know if you want to go.
