PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS!

I'm putting this one on permanent status because its 3 and a half years of work; mine, these swimmers AND parents. The hardest part for parents, to do nothing, trust me to guide their girls and push them past their fears.

These girls started with me in the fall of 2022 when the girls were 4 and 2. After a trip to visit family necessitated a warning about the impending bathtime screaming from the girls and dread from mom being "normal". Mom decided to get them in lessons if only to be able to wash their hair without a meltdown.

There were tears. Soooo many tears in those early weeks, months, the first year for sure. Mom would go for walks around the neighborhood or sit in her car on bad weather days because it was hard to hear but she trusted me and I am so grateful she did!

The tears lessened. The competence grew. Then the confidence came in. The first summer after starting, bath time was no longer dreaded and a slip off the step into the hot tub became "I'M OK!!". The scary things became less scary, then normal, then fun!

All culminating in this moment!!! The first jump off the diving board, the happy tears from me and mom and that little voice at the end, "Are we graduated?!" 😭😭

So proud of you H & E!!!!

Dry drowning is not a real term.

If you are avoiding swim lessons for your child because of "dry drowning" or "secondary drowning" please listen to this pediatric emergency specialist.

Our bodies are equipped with amazing reflexes which keep water out of the lungs. Coughing after being underwater is as dangerous as swallowing water "down the wrong tube". You wouldn't withhold drinking water from your child just in case they put it down the wrong tube. Please don't deny them water competency for the same reason!

Drowning is the real risk. It is leading cause of death of children between the ages of 1-4. Water exposure before 12 months and swim lessons after that is one of many layers of protection and is the ONLY one your child carries with them everywhere they go.
