🍂 TRIVIA TONIGHT at 7p we are celebrating all of the Fall Flavors coming our way 🥧

We all know about pecan pies, mulled cider, and toasty marshmallow treats, but tonight we’re spicing up the competition with tasty tricks and treats and trivia! Think you know your Halloween candy traditions? Just how many pumpkin pies go into Wilmington Brewing Company’s Pretty Pumpkin Ale (freshly restocked 🙋‍♀️) what year did the first Pumpkin Spice Latte hit the scene?

Today we celebrate Take The Lake co-founder Frank Gault - (In Memoriam)

Alongside his work establishing our Labor Day lake traditions, Frank Gault lived a life committed to service, family, and community in Columbus County.

Growing up at Lake Waccamaw, Frank was an accomplished athlete. In the July 18, 1946 edition of The News Reporter, sportswriter Jiggs Powers highlighted Frank as a standout lefty pitcher for the newly formed Columbus Travelers, throwing four strong innings and allowing just three hits in a 17-3 victory over the Acme Aces. Decades later, he co-chaired the Lee J. Greer Labor Day Swim committee alongside Dr. Bob Eplee, J.B. Lee III, Johnny McNeill, and Julie Stocks, laying the foundation for Take The Lake.

Frank’s commitment to service ran deep. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during both World War II and the Korean Conflict, earning the Silver Star and the WWII Merchant Marine Victory Medal for his service in wartime logistics. Back home, he devoted years to local youth as a dedicated leader with Whiteville Boy Scout Troop 501, earning the Silver Beaver Award for his distinguished leadership.

A true craftsman mostly using local materials, Frank was known for his skilled whittling and traditional basket-making. He was equally famous for his cooking, generously sharing his talents at wild-game cookoffs and community fundraisers. His catfish dinners at Johnny McNeill’s pier raised money for the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum and remain at the core of many locals’ fond memories of Lake Waccamaw.

Frank’s spirit of service, athleticism, and community fun lives on every Labor Day weekend at Lake Waccamaw!
