I’m no expert, but I do have some very practical experience in kayaking over the past 10+ years and want to offer this caution.
Over the past few months I have seen way too many news stories on lost or missing kayakers. This is senseless. With a few lessons and some common sense, this does not have to happen. Folks, kayaking DOES require some skill, common sense, and foresight. Just don’t go out there and say “I can’t be too hard” or “I’ll get the hang of it”. If you do, then maybe we will hear about you on the news too.
I think my biggest beef is with the kayak rental companies (some, not all). They send folks out with absolutely zero instruction. At a recent trip down the Weekie Wachee river, I bet 80-85% of kayakers had their paddle upside down or backwards. That right there tells me that the rental companies have no interest in making their customer trips safe and successful, they are only interested in making that dollar. I and my fellow kayakers, find ourselves spending most of our trips trying to help the first timer. We have made numerous rescues of people, boats and gear at various popular waterways. It excites me that so many people are taking an interest in kayaking but COME ON PEOPLE, take a lesson or 2 so you do not end up on BayNews9!!!!!!
