Coffee and catching up with Molly Boyne! Had a chance to ask her a few questions, and create a coffee collab!
RBC--Tell us a little bit about yourself! Where you're from, where you currently play, your position, anything you'd like!
MB--Hi, my name is Molly Boyne. I am a 28 year old physiotherapist from County Wexford in Ireland. I play in the back row, preferably number 7. I started my rugby journey when I went to university at Trinity College Dublin and my first team was DUFC Women. I moved to Railway Union RFC in 2019 and found my home in one of the best clubs in Ireland. I have been lucky enough to play for Leinster in the Interprovincial Championship since 2022. I have 11 caps for the province and captained the team in the 2025 season. I also played for the Combined Provinces and the Wolfhounds in the Celtic Challenge from 2023-2025, captaining the Wolfhounds in 2024. I started playing Rugby League in the summer of 2025 and earned my first three caps for Ireland later in the year against France, the Netherlands and Canada.
My partner and I have recently flown the nest of Ireland to go on our travels. We are currently in Hong Kong playing with Hong Kong Football Club. I am very much enjoying my first experience of playing rugby union outside of Ireland and all the learning that comes with that! Our next adventure is in Brisbane, Australia in April where we will join the University of Queensland. We are in a very exciting period in our lives where everything is new and everchanging - it's a fantastic opportunity to grow as people and players!
RBC--What would you tell people who don't know a whole lot about rugby in general, and women's rugby in particular, about the sport that would make them want to get involved and watch or play?
MB--That it is one of the most welcoming communities you will find. There is a place for every type of body on a rugby team and every type of person in rugby club. There are so many ways to get involved, be it as a spectator, supporter, player, ref or volunteer, and you can guarantee your local team will be only too delighted to see you coming. So give it a try! Put a match on the tv, search it up on YouTube or pop down to the nearest club and see what it's all about. Once you do, you won't look back. Women's rugby is growing at an exponential rate and it's so exciting to see what's to come in the next few years. There are exciting competitions coming up this year like the Women's Six Nations, Pacific Rugby Nations Championships, Asia Rugby Championships and the WXV Global Series, plus the first ever Women's Lions Tour to look forward to in 2027! So get stuck in, in whatever shape or form you can, and I promise you won't regret it!
RBC--Why did you choose rugby as your sport over any other?
MB--I played field hockey growing up, but always wanted to give rugby a go. When I got to university, I decided it was time and I have never looked back. With DUFC Women's team, I found a group of amazing friends, a sport that challenged me both physically and mentally, and a camaraderie between teammates that I had never felt before. Every time you pull on your rugby jersey, you're going into battle for your team, the person beside you, and the person who wore your jersey before you. Putting your body on the line for each other creates a bond like no other sport I've found and you can feel that both on and off the pitch.
RBC--4. What is your favorite part of being a rugby player?
MB--The opportunities that it gives you. As an athlete, I get the chance to push myself every day, be it on the pitch or in the gym. There's always more to learn and ways to be better. As a person, it has opened so many doors for me in terms of making friends, expanding networks, creating job opportunities, building connections and finding new roots. I am very lucky that so many of the good things in my life have happened as a result of the people I have met through rugby. I'm very excited for what's to come as my rugby journey continues on the other side of the world!
RBC--What is your ultimate goal in rugby?
MB--To keep on keeping on - working hard, getting better, learning and having fun!
The coffee's name comes from a family saying based on a much-loved children's book. Thank you Molly, and best wishes to you and yours on your adventures!!!
