FUN FACT FRIDAY: Hurst returns the most home runs for Polk State Softball since 2019
Following its best season in a decade, Polk State Softball will have to replace several key pieces. The good news for the Eagles, however, is that they do have a big bat returning. That would be sophomore catcher Leia Hurst.
The lone Polk State freshman to earn All-Citrus Conference honors last season, Hurst finished the year with a .344 average, five home runs and 39 RBIs. She is the leading returner for the Eagles in each of those categories. Hurst also led the team last season with 13 doubles. The five home runs last season ranked second on the team behind Chelsi Rae' Hebert.
To find a returning player who hit more home runs for Polk State as a freshman, however, one would have to go back six years. In 2019, Destinee Jackson hit nine home runs for Polk State. Jackson returned in 2020, but the season was shortened to 14 games by the pandemic. Still, Jackson led the team by hitting .477 with two home runs and seven stolen bases. As the Eagles get ready for their third year under Head Coach Kevin Lewis, Hurst hopes she can continue to be a force as well.
