Daron and Lisa slipped away for a little fun the other day to throw hoppers, and Daron put a beautiful fish in the net. Nice work, Daron! With the lower flows we're seeing, conditions are looking good for hopper and hopper-dropper fishing, and we expect the bite to become even more consistent.

The New Orange Psycho Ant Is Here

We had a lot of customers asking for the Psycho Ant in orange, so we went ahead and had it made.

The new Orange Psycho Ant is now in stock and available on the Flys and Guides website. As far as we know, this orange color variation is exclusive to Flys and Guides.

The bright orange body makes the fly easy to track through glare, broken water, fast current, and longer drifts. It also gives trout a different look from the traditional black, brown, tan, and other natural ant colors they see throughout the season.

This is a great terrestrial pattern for fishing tight to grassy banks, underneath overhanging trees, along current seams, and anywhere ants and other insects may fall into the river.

Quantities are limited, so get them while they last.

The New White River Fishing Report Is Up

The sulphur hatch is winding down, lower water is returning, and hopper season is beginning to take shape on the White River and Norfork Tailwater.

In this report, we break down where hopper fishing may be most productive, how to adjust between low water and stronger generation, where to concentrate your casts, and how we rig our hopper-dropper setups.

We also share the inspiring story of Tonya, who was born without one hand and has adapted incredibly well to fly fishing. She caught a couple of nice rainbows on the Norfork and handled them like a champ. It was truly an honor to be part of her day.

We need your opinion.

We're working on a new design for Flys and Guides and wanted to get some feedback before we move forward.

The idea is to take a White River mayfly and give it some "Bug Life" personality while incorporating the things that represent who we are—boats, flies, guides, and life on the river.

A few things to keep in mind:

The boat would never be a standalone logo.
It would either be incorporated into the bug design or not used at all.

These are just rough concepts we're kicking around.

Which version do you like best, #1 or #2?
Would this be something you'd wear on a t-shirt or hoodie?

What would you change? What do you like? What don't you like?

Give us your honest opinion. We can take it.

Lisa's report is UP!!

After last week’s rain, some areas up north experienced flooding, and in return that has brought the lake levels up a bit. With the warmer weather, the flows have also increased.

Today was our guide team play day, and it was great to spend some time on the water with Lisa and Daron. We started out throwing dries and waiting for the water to come up. Once the generation started, we switched things up and found some fish in the higher water.

It wasn't about work today—it was about getting away for a few hours and enjoying the river together. I didn't do much fishing myself, and honestly, I didn't want to. I was happy to sit back, relax, and let Lisa and Daron do the fishing while I enjoyed the day.

Sometimes it's nice to take a break from guiding, spend time with the team, and remember why we all love being on the water in the first place.

The May caddis hatch is pretty much a wrap, and this year was definitely different.

Low water made the White River tight, technical, and crowded at times, but it also taught us a lot. Some days we had it dialed in, and some days the fish reminded us who was really in charge.

In this report, we break down the end of the caddis hatch, the start of sulfurs, what we’re seeing on Norfork, the confluence program, afternoon generation, and what to expect heading into Memorial Day weekend.

The North Fork siphon is back up and running, which is definitely good news for the river. They had been running around 4 megawatts, roughly 305 CFS, but now it’s dropped back down closer to 185. I honestly liked the 4 megawatts because it opened up a lot more water for running the jet, but now you’re a little more limited again, so pay attention to that.

The river is about 4 inches lower than it was, and we’re back to having to get out and pull drift boats over a few spots — especially around Cook’s Island and Ace in the Hole. Other than that, you should still be able to float it pretty easily in a drift boat. Rafts and kayaks really have no issues at all.

Overall though, this is positive news because we need that siphon water. It brings extra oxygen into the system. The water had been pretty cold lately, and the fish definitely seemed a little lethargic because of it.
The Confluence has also been fishing well, so that’s still a solid option if you want to run your jet boat on the upper section around Dock Hole and then potentially pull out and re-launch later in the afternoon once water levels drop below.

One thing we’ve continued noticing is when they run water on the White River late in the afternoon — around 4 or 5 p.m. — it seems to hold the Confluence up until close to 1 a.m. before it fully drops back out. The water is still very fishable during that time; it just carries a little denser color to it.

We did get some rain the other day that muddied things up slightly from runoff coming in through Buffalo and Crooked Creek, but for the most part that has already settled back down and conditions are looking much more normal again.

Just a heads up for everyone heading this way. I’ve got a couple days off beginning today and tomorrow, so I’ll finally have some time to sit down and work on a full report today. Keep an eye out for that soon.

Caddis opportunities are still hanging on, low water is still shaping a lot of what we are seeing on the White River, and the Norfork has had some interesting changes too. I also talk about what may be next as we start looking toward sulfurs.
