Sometimes, a message from a family reminds us why we do what we do. ❤️
Jayden and Lucas trained with us for years before their family moved from Washington to South Carolina.
A few days ago, their family surprised us with these photos from their travels.
When Mrs. Kim and I saw the boys standing at Yellowstone, thousands of miles away, still wearing their Master Pae’s World Class Martial Arts hoodies, we both smiled.
But then we read their parents’ message.
“Since we have made such a huge and unforgettable milestone with Master Pae and Mrs. Kim, you will be always in our heart.”
That stopped me for a moment.
As instructors, of course we want our students to develop strong technique. We want them to kick better, become stronger, earn their belts, learn discipline, and become confident martial artists.
But after many years of teaching, moments like this remind me that Taekwondo can become something much bigger than what happens on the mat.
We watch children grow up.
We see the shy child begin to believe in himself.
We see students struggle, try again, and finally succeed.
We celebrate belt tests, demonstrations, tournaments, birthdays, graduations, and so many ordinary days in between.
And somewhere along the way, students, parents, instructors, and families become an important part of one another’s lives.
Military orders come.
Jobs change.
Families move.
Children grow up.
But the relationships and memories don’t simply disappear when someone leaves the dojang.
Jayden and Lucas, seeing these pictures made Mrs. Kim and me so happy.
Keep training. Keep growing. Keep challenging yourselves.
Wherever your Taekwondo journey takes you, know that there will always be people here in Washington cheering for you.
And to your whole family — thank you for allowing us to be a part of your boys’ lives and for continuing to let us be part of their journey.
We miss you all. ❤️🥋
This is one of the greatest privileges of being a Taekwondo instructor.
