THE MIRROR NEEDED DUSTING ::
i was getting ready in my sister's childhood bedroom before my high school reunion, and i couldn't see myself clearly in the full-length mirror. figured it was my glasses — took them off, cleaned the lenses, rubbed my eyes. still hazy.
then i reached out and touched the mirror. and realized: it wasn't me. the mirror itself needed dusting.

i had to feel it to believe it. proof, not assumption. wiped it down, and there i was — not the blurred version i was looking at just moments before.
turns out that was just the warm-up. the reunion was the same practice, aimed outward. these were the people who knew me while i was still becoming — who had a hand in shaping who i'd turn into. seeing them again wasn't nostalgia, everyone frozen at eighteen. it was actually looking. same as the mirror that morning: not who i remembered, who they actually are now.
grateful for the people who helped shape who i was becoming — and just as grateful for every year we've lived since, all of it walking into that room with them.
that's the practice this week too: not what you assume is true about someone (including yourself), but what's actually there when you pay attention and allow yourself to clear the lens.
