Professor Medley is a 4th degree black belt in Japanese jūjitsu and a black belt in Gracie jiu jitsu.

Choke Defense for Public safety Personnel - FREE Seminar for Jefferson county and Colorado State LEOs and detention/ correctional staff. Saturday, May 30, 2026 10:00am -Noon. Defenses will include early (body positional defenses), middle (arm positional defenses), and late (emergency) defenses. Chokes vs strangles are compared and defenses will be contrasted.

LJJA presented some concepts supporting validation for jiu-jitsu-based police training. The focus was on the importance that any methods based on Brazilian jiu-jitsu be part of a standardized curriculum in order for any safety data to be externally valid for agency consideration.

Lakewood Jiu Jitsu Academy has been invited to present a lecture on use-of-force in police restraint and a demonstration of Gracie Jiu-jitsu's SafeWrap procedure at the 2026 Academy of Criminal Justice Science annual conference in Philadelphia, PA. This presentation will inform attendees about the benefits of jiu-jitsu based methods in police training with emphasis on the innovations of SafeWrap as an alternative to prone restraint. For those who are attending ACJS this year, the presentation will be on Thursday, March 5, at 8am in room 406.
