Some people come to GMTRC because they love horses. Some come because they want to serve. And sometimes, the barn becomes a place where both things come together in ways we never expected. 💙

For the past year, Sally has been a steady presence at GMTRC, volunteering twice a week and becoming an important part of the behind-the-scenes work that keeps our barn running. From barn duty and lesson preparation to grooming horses and learning their individual quirks, she has embraced every part of the experience—and the people and horses have given plenty back in return.

Her reflections offer a beautiful glimpse into the relationships, lessons, and unexpected moments that have made her time at GMTRC so meaningful. We especially love hearing how a little apprehension about one particular horse turned into a connection she describes as unforgettable. 🐴

🐴 Mini Horses, Big Impact 💙

Our mini horses have officially joined student lessons, and they've been a huge hit!

From grooming sessions to obstacle courses and in-hand activities, students have loved the opportunity to change things up and spend time with these adorable new partners.

The minis' smaller size and gentle, approachable presence have helped many students build confidence, try new skills, and develop meaningful connections with horses in a whole new way.

We’ve loved seeing the joy these minis bring to our students, and we’re so grateful for their involvement in our program.

👀 Horse Sense: Seeing the World Differently 🐴

Have you ever noticed that horses tend to spot things well before you do?

That's because horses experience the world very differently.

With eyes positioned on the sides of their heads, horses have nearly 350° of vision. As prey animals, they're especially attuned to movement, noticing even the smallest changes in their surroundings long before most people would. While they can distinguish some colors, movement catches their attention far more readily than fine details.

Horses also have small blind spots directly in front of their nose and directly behind them. That's why we always approach thoughtfully, making sure they know we're there before entering their space.

This unique way of seeing the world is also why we introduce new objects, obstacles, and environments gradually—giving our horses time to observe, investigate, and build confidence before asking them to move forward.

The more we understand how horses experience the world, the better partners we can become. 💙

💙 A Lesson Moment We Loved 💙

If you know Kate, you know she always brings a little extra color to the barn! From bright shoes to fun socks, she never misses an opportunity to show off her personality.

But this week, she took it to the next level... 👟🐴

Kate arrived wearing custom shoes featuring none other than her favorite horse, Opi, complete with hearts to show just how much he means to her!

Kate looks forward to spending time with Opi each week during her unmounted lessons. Whether they're grooming, leading, or simply enjoying one another's company, their partnership is built on trust, joy, and a whole lot of love.

It's moments like these that remind us the connection between horse and human extends far beyond the saddle—and sometimes, it even inspires the perfect pair of shoes. 💙✨

☀️ That's a Wrap on Aaron's Acres Camp! 🐴

Six Tuesdays, countless smiles, and so many moments we'll never forget.

As we wrapped up another wonderful summer with our friends from Aaron's Acres, we found ourselves reflecting on all the little victories that made this camp so special.

💙 A former GMTRC student returned to the barn for camp and was reunited with his instructor for another ride together.

🌦️ We managed to beat the rain and make the most of every opportunity to be with the horses.

👟 One camper who usually prefers to go shoeless worked through that challenge so he could ride—and ended the day with a huge smile.

🐴 Many familiar campers returned this summer, and it was a joy to see how much more comfortable and confident they were with the horses compared to last year.

🐎 The mini horses were also a huge highlight this year—campers absolutely loved spending time with them, and their gentle, playful presence brought so many extra smiles and moments of joy.

One camper summed up his experience with Echo perfectly:
"He is so calm, gentle, and tall like me. I want to take him home!" ❤️

🤠 Volunteer Dick quickly became a weekly highlight, arriving in full cowboy attire and demonstrating his roping skills—a memory that had campers and volunteers smiling all day long.

🎨 From painting life-sized horse outlines to exploring sensory stations, playing games, creating crafts, and enjoying quiet moments to recharge, every day offered something new. Of course, riding, leading, and grooming our horses remained the highlight for many.

To our Aaron's Acres campers, families, volunteers, and staff—thank you for making this summer one filled with courage, laughter, friendship, and meaningful connection. We already can't wait for next year!

🎈 Behind the Scenes: Preparing Our Horses for Horse Show Season 🐴

What do pool noodles, giant yoga balls, bubble blasters, inflatable tube men, and colorful decorations all have in common?

They've all become part of our horses' training! 😄

As we get ready for our upcoming horse show—with all its fun themes, decorations, and unexpected sights—we've been setting aside regular training sessions designed to help our horses feel confident around the unfamiliar.

This process is sometimes called desensitization, but for us, it's about much more than simply getting used to something "scary." Rather than asking our horses to ignore their instincts, we want them to become curious, thoughtful, and confident. We introduce new objects gradually, giving each horse the time and space to investigate, process, and decide that what they're seeing is safe.

We're incredibly proud of how our horses have approached each new challenge. Their willingness to pause, think, and partner with us is a testament to the trust we've built together.

Preparing for horse show season isn't just about practicing patterns in the arena. It's about helping our equine partners develop the confidence they'll carry into every lesson, event, and new experience.

Our horses have been absolute rockstars, and we can't wait to see that confidence shine at the horse show! 💙

🌧️ Rainy Days = New Ways to Learn 🐴

Recent stormy weather may have kept us out of the arena, but it certainly didn't stop the learning!

When riding wasn't an option, Camryn, Xavier, and Clio rolled up their sleeves and stepped into an important part of horsemanship: tack care. Together, they cleaned equipment, learned the names and purposes of different pieces of tack, and even worked as a team to assemble a bridle.

Along the way, there were plenty of laughs over some of the more unusual tack terminology—and yes, we all learned there's a difference between a "pommel" and "pummel"! 😄

More importantly, the lesson became an opportunity to practice teamwork. As they worked together, students discovered that everyone approaches a task a little differently—and that different doesn't mean wrong. By listening to one another, sharing ideas, and solving problems as a team, they built skills that extend far beyond the barn.

At GMTRC, every lesson is an opportunity to grow. Sometimes that growth happens in the saddle, and sometimes it happens around a tack rack—but it's always meaningful.

🐴 Behind the Scenes: Farrier Care 🐴

Ever wonder how we keep our horses’ hooves healthy and strong?

At GMTRC, our farrier visits about once a quarter for routine hoof care—and more often if a horse needs immediate attention. Just like our fingernails, a horse’s hooves are constantly growing and need regular maintenance to stay in good shape.

Made from the same protein—keratin—hooves require consistent trimming to prevent cracking, imbalance, or discomfort. Keeping hooves properly shaped also supports a horse’s posture, movement, and overall soundness.

Our farrier also handles the fitting and maintenance of horseshoes when needed. For horses that wear shoes, they provide extra support or protection depending on the horse’s needs. You might notice that not all of our horses wear shoes—and that’s intentional! Most of our herd goes barefoot, which works well for their lifestyle and the surfaces they work on.

Healthy hooves are the foundation for everything our horses do—from lessons to groundwork to simply moving comfortably through their day. We’re grateful for the skilled care that helps keep our herd feeling their best! 💙
