Hot weather is the perfect time to focus on quality instead of quantity. Short, thoughtful sessions can make a big difference while keeping your horse comfortable.

1️⃣ Halt-to-Walk Transitions
Practice smooth, balanced transitions every few strides. This encourages your horse to shift weight onto the hindquarters while helping you maintain an upright, centered position.

2️⃣ Large Serpentines at the Walk
Ride wide, flowing serpentines with soft bends. This improves your horse’s flexibility, straightness, and balance while encouraging you to stay evenly weighted in both stirrups.

3️⃣ Pole Walks
Walk over a line of 3–5 ground poles with a relaxed rhythm. Ground poles encourage your horse to engage the core, lift the back, and improve posture while helping you develop an independent, balanced seat.

💧 Hot Weather Tip: Keep sessions to 15–20 minutes, ride during the coolest part of the day, offer plenty of water, and allow frequent walk breaks.

We all have bad days. The good news is that time with your horse can help you clear your mind and refocus. Before you ride, try these three simple things:

1️⃣ Leave the Day at the Barn Door
Before you get on, take a few slow breaths and remind yourself: For the next hour, I only need to be here. You don’t have to solve everything while you ride.

2️⃣ Focus on One Simple Goal
Don’t try to have the “perfect” ride. Pick one small goal—maybe a relaxed walk, smooth transitions, or simply staying soft and balanced. Small successes can change the direction of your whole day.

3️⃣ Listen to Your Horse
Pay attention to your horse’s breathing, rhythm, and movement. Horses bring us into the present moment because they require us to be aware of what is happening right now.

The walk is one of the most valuable gaits for improving your horse’s flexibility, relaxation, and responsiveness. Before moving on to faster work, try these simple exercises:

✅ 1. Ride Large Circles with Purpose
A 20-meter circle is much more than simply going around in a circle. Focus on creating an even bend from your horse’s nose to tail while maintaining a steady rhythm. Encourage your horse to step actively underneath with the inside hind leg and stretch softly into the outside rein. Large circles help improve balance, loosen stiff muscles, and increase flexibility through the ribcage and topline without creating tension.

✅ 2. Practice Leg Yields
At the walk, ask your horse to step sideways away from your inside leg. This improves lateral suppleness and helps unlock stiffness in the ribcage.

✅ 3. Use Frequent Changes of Bend
