Heads up about a scam call I just received. The call came in as a recording purportedly from Dominion Energy indicating “a technician is in route to your residence to disconnect your service for non-payment”. As I know my account is current, I pushed 1 to speak with a rep. A woman with an Hispanic accent informed me I was supposedly 3 months in arrears but could make a $399.62 payment and she’d immediately send a code to the tech notifying him not to continue the disconnection.
I logged onto my Dominion online account and verified my last 3 payments. The rep indicated “sometimes our system doesn’t correctly register online payments”. I told her that made absolutely no sense, so she then assured me she was only trying to help prevent a disconnection. I played along and asked what the process was to correct the issue. She told me to “log into your bank account, find the transfer funds or Zelle button and I’ll give you the account info so you can pay your account and prevent disconnection”. Admittedly, at this point I started cursing and told her no legitimate business entity would require a client to transfer or Zelle funds in that manner. She tried to convince me that she was calling from Dominion Energy by saying she’d never asked me for my bank account info and pointed out I would be making the direct payment myself. I responded with more cursing and she promised me that she’d call the tech and tell him to immediately disconnect my service and then she hung up. I tried to call the number back (I wasn’t through cursing her out), but got the Verizon recording indicating my call could not be completed. I called Dominion Energy (the legit number) and asked the rep to take a scam report.
Please be aware of these types of scammers preying on our community. They often use burner phones to bounce off cell towers or use technology to spoof legitimate company numbers. They may initially seem to want to help or they may immediately act in a threatening manner. Legitimate businesses don’t make cold calls like this demanding money. I know this is a long post, but I wanted to relay the incident to hopefully prevent someone else from becoming a victim.
