Ageless Albert Beckles Passes Away
Sad news came today with the word that Albert Beckles passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.Depending on who you talked to, Beckles was born on either July 14, 1930, or 1938. I could never get the great one to give me the answer to that question. Not that it really mattered. Either way he was ageless.
Beckles and I had a rocky beginning in what evolved into a strong friendship.Back in 1986 FLEX Magazine assigned me to do Mr. Olympia predictions. He had finished second the year before to Lee Haney, with Rich Gaspari in third. This time around I placed Gaspari ahead of Beckles (and ahead of Haney, but that’s another story for another time—let’s just say I was strongly encouraged to call for the major upset).
When the issue hit the streets, the Barbados-born Beckles wasn’t fond of my crystal ball, to say the least. And he let FLEX Editor-in-Chief Jerry Kindella know in a handwritten letter that questioned my sanity. “I beat Gaspari last year...who is this idiot doing these predictions?”, Beckles said. That was one of the nicer comments in the letter, as you can imagine.
We eventually met and through the years developed a solid friendship. Despite the harsh words in his letter years back, I found the man to be classy and kind. Even though Gaspari did eventually land ahead of Beckles in ‘86. It was never brought up again.
He entered over 100 contests during his brilliant career, which included three victories at the Night of Champions and 10 victories overall.
Albert Beckles, RIP.
