Well, it wasn’t pretty, but we got a win.
Roundhouse () was the bot we were honestly most afraid of. Their massive bar and flamethrower is a scary combo. Even if we survived the bar, there was every possibility our 3D Printed battery boxes would be melted by the flamethrower, but we just had to try our best.
On this day, the bot was ready on time, we had time to test, and finally, we felt like Calypso was working the way we wanted…
Fight starts, it’s really good, but then one of our drive sides starts acting up. A sprocket is bent on one four front wheels, a chain falls off, a keyway shears elsewhere. We’re crab walking, but not well. Roundhouse loses a wheel, and then a weapon belt, we’re still moving, the weapon’s still spinning. Time’s up. It’s a blur…
… and then, it’s announced that we’ve won. It’s a euphoric moment, as every last bit of the past 6 weeks of nonstop build finally pays off…
And… we’re gonna do it again? And… MANTA’s gonna be there? Oh boy…

Ok yeah, de-clawed the crab, BUT DID YOU SEE US GETTING UNDER THEM?!?!? CALYPSO‘S ACTUALLY SHOWING WHAT IT CAN DO?!?!? And not only did our weapon take a chunk out of their wedge, but it bent in one of Mad Catter’s uprights! Had that exchange gone slightly different, we’d have a completely different result on our hands! 🤩✨
… B U T, we’re in the reality where Catter knocked off our weapon, and sent it up into the air, coming back down, ricocheting off the floor and into the glass, where it took a fairly significant chunk out of the thick polycarbonate walls of the battlebox. 😅
You wanna know what caused that? Our weapon shaft had inconsistent heat-treating. Yep. That’s it. Where it should’ve been a certain hardness all the way through, the shaft that broke was different hardnesses throughout. And like, yeah, that sucks, but it happens. We opted once again to play dead after the big hit, instead of keeping the fight going. Everything worked in the robot, but we were down one of our most important protective pieces, so decided to play it safe and put on as good of a final fight as we could!!!

WELL, that could’ve gone better! 😅
We just barely had Calypso ready in time for our first fight with . We hadn’t even had the opportunity to drive it yet until the fight started. Derek Tran from Robotic Death Company quickly put as much of a tune as he could onto our drive ESCs before we had to go out.
We tried our best to stay pointed at Skorpios, playing as much defense as we could. We were able to get a few decent hits on them, but ultimately they were able to get a hold of us, and that was all she wrote. They chewed into the main body of the bot, decimated our weapon pulley, and ripped off our poor boy’s beautiful face! 😭😭😭
After this, the robot was still functional, despite damage sustained, but Josh strategically decided to stop moving, as we didn’t want to continue damaging the bot when we desperately needed to diagnose and fix the issues with the drive. We chose to take the loss in hopes of coming into our next fight stronger! 😤

THIS WEEKEND! It’s RCL National finals at the Discovery Cube in Santa Ana! Come on by and see members of Team Horizon competing across 4 different weight classes!

In Fairyweights, Price will be competing with her control bot, briklit! She’ll also be running Team Solar Power’s terrifying horizontal, Terribly Sorry!
In antweights, our team captain Josh will be running his formidable hammersaw, Ishtar, and Dylan W will be running his absurdly fast and dangerous vert, noname!
In 12s, Dylan W is once again looking to maul the competition with his drisk, Grizz!
And finally, in 30 sportsman, Wes will be flipping opponents like burgers on the grill with his bot, Dad!

Calypso was a very busy crab last week, getting the opportunity come out of his shell and say hello to some wonderful people!

He spent time at the Design 2 Part expo, being on display for our sponsors at and ! For Rapid Axis, we were showing off some of the incredible parts that they’d machined for us, and for Serra Laser, we were able to show off the wonderful frame that they had cut AND Laser Welded for us!
As well, he had the opportunity to say hi to , an FRC team that our team member Alon mentors!

Calypso was very excited to meet so many new people so soon after his debut (which you can watch RIGHT NOW if you’re a supporter on ’ page), and he can’t wait to meet you when the final edit for Group A is released! But that, as always, will be coming up… 💞🦀

We had an incredible weekend with Calypso at and .destruct.a.thon! Hard to believe it was one week go that we put the Crab in the box for his first fight! We’re so proud!!! 🥹💞🦀

The last week was crazy, and if it weren’t for the incredible team of people we had working on this robot, it wouldn’t have been possible. We borrowed Derek Tran from RDC and Cindy Lu from DOOM, in addition to bringing on Wes Socia of The Fun-gineers and Dylan Woessner of Kodiak Robotics as new members of the team, and they were all incredible additions! 💞

Good luck to everybody competing in Face-Offs this weekend! We can’t wait for everybody to be able to see these fights, as we’ve all put so much love and hard work into every single one of them! ❤️

We had our fight against Skorpios last night, and are still slated to fight and later this weekend! The new Mad Catter build is mean, but we’re gonna see if Calypso is meaner!
