๐ฒ๐ด Happy World Bicycle Day from the Ranch!
We tried explaining to the herd that cycling is great cardio and excellent for the environment. Apparently, someone took the advice a little too literally.
We are still trying to figure out how he's going to use the brakes with hooves, but you have to admire the absolute determination. ๐
If you're out cycling on the country roads near our pastures today, give us a wave! Just keep an eye out for any rogue equines trying to beat your personal best on Strava. ๐
๐ Tell us in the comments: What caption would you give this horse? Best answer gets bragging rights at the barn!

๐ฎ The Science of the Herd: How Does a Cow Actually Work?
We see cows grazing out in the pastures every day, but beneath those calm eyes lies some truly fascinating biology! ๐พ
Grab the kids and check out the diagram below to learn three mind-blowing facts about how a cow's body is built for survival and friendship! ๐
๐ฆท Fact 1: The Top Tooth MysteryDid you know cows have zero top front teeth? Instead, they have a tough, leathery skin pad called a "dental pad." To eat, they wrap their long, rough tongues around a clump of grass and press their bottom teeth against that hard top pad to tear the grass away.
๐ Fact 2: Four Stomachs? Not Quite! You might have heard that cows have four stomachs, but they actually have one massive stomach with four distinct compartments (the Rumen, Reticulum, Omasum, and Abomasum). This complex system allows them to ferment and break down tough fibers in grass that human stomachs could never digest!
โค๏ธ Fact 3: They Have Best Friends!Cows are deeply emotional and social animals. Research shows that they form tight-knit bonds and pick a specific best friend within their herd. When they are separated from their favorite buddy, their heart rates spike and they experience measurable stress!
Next time you look out at the pasture, see if you can spot a pair of cows that always seem to hang out near each otherโyou might just be looking at two lifelong best friends!
๐ Parents: Ask your kids what they think a cow would name their best friend, and drop the funniest names in the comments!

๐ด ๐ The "Share-with-Your-Horse" Apple-Oat Donut Recipe
This dense, chewy donut mimics a healthy baked oatmeal breakfast bar for humans, and acts as a giant, soft cookie treat for your horse.
๐ Ingredients You Need:
2 cups Rolled Oats (Provides excellent fiber and energy)
1 cup Unsweetened Applesauce (Binds the dough and adds natural sweetness)
1 medium Apple, grated or finely shredded (Use Fuji or Honeycrisp for maximum flavor)
2 tablespoons Molasses or Honey (Adds the classic "donut" sweetness)
๐ฅฃ Step-by-Step Instructions
Prep the Oven: Preheat your kitchen oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Lightly grease a donut baking pan using a tiny splash of coconut oil or vegetable oil.
Mix the Base: In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, unsweetened applesauce, and grated apple. Stir until the oats have fully absorbed the moisture.
Add Sweetener: Pour in the molasses or honey. Stir thoroughly until the mixture forms a thick, sticky, uniform dough.
Shape the Donut: Press the dough tightly into your donut pan molds. If you do not have a donut pan, simply shape the dough into a thick circle on a regular baking sheet and press your thumb through the center to create a donut hole!
Bake Until Firm: Bake for 20 to 22 minutes [โก]. The donuts should feel firm to the touch and look slightly golden on the edges.
Cool Completely: Let the donuts cool entirely in the pan before removing them.
โ ๏ธ Critical Sharing Rules for the Ranch Cooling is Mandatory: Never feed a warm baked good to a horse. Their stomachs are incredibly sensitive to hot dough, which can cause severe, painful gas (colic).
Human Upgrades (Optional): If humans want a more traditional sweet treat, split the batch in half! Leave the horse's half plain, and dip the human half in a glaze made of powdered sugar and a splash of milk.
Choking Hazard Prevention: For horses that tend to bolt or gulp their treats without chewing, break their donut into 3 or 4 smaller pieces before feeding it to them.

๐ด The Science of the Herd: How Do Horses Sleep Standing Up?
Ever wonder why horses donโt just topple over when they snooze on their feet? It all comes down to an incredible anatomical feature called the Stay Apparatus.
Gather the kids and check out the photo below to see how a horse's body acts like a biomechanical puzzle!
๐ง ๐๐งฌ The Stay Apparatus (The Anatomy Lock) Horses have a special system of tendons and ligaments that essentially "locks" their joint braces in place. This allows them to completely relax their muscles without collapsing. It takes almost zero physical effort for them to stand still!
๐ฆ Why did they evolve this way? As prey animals, a horse's best defense is a quick escape. Getting up off the ground takes time and energy. By napping on their feet, they can bolt at top speed the second they sense danger.
๐ค The Catch: While they can get light sleep standing up, horses must lie down to achieve deep REM (dreaming) sleep. They only need about 30 minutes of this deep sleep a day, and they usually wait until they feel 100% safe with their herd mates watching over them. Next time you visit the ranch, see if you can spot a horse with one hind hoof slightly resting on its tipโthat means they are locked in and taking a power nap!
๐ Parents: Ask your kids what they think a horse dreams about, and tell us their funniest answers in the comments!
