The Guerrero Family and Latino Basketball Association wants to extend condolences to the Nunez Family.
To say myself or the LBA wouldn’t have accomplished any success without the ground work Tommy laid before would be an understatement.

The year was 1991, my first Tommy and the only one I ever played without me being part of SANGRE LATINA. Meeting Tommy was surreal and my friendship with the Nunez Family began. My oldest daughter Alexus wasn’t even born yet. All 3 of my daughters were born into attending the TOMMY every Labor Day Weekend. My daughters grew up in Phoenix Labor Day weekends with SANGRE LATINA and of course the famous green chile burritos in the snack bar.

Many of you don’t remember the days of Santa Fe / NM, The Original Alma Latina (RIP Joe Molina / however he didn’t start Alma Latina), The Gamblers, Houston Monarchs, East Los, EAST LA (Dave Martinez), JR Lakers, Nosotros, Mis Hermanos, The Matador Sponsored Team, Viva Zapata, and many more when there was just one division. And who could forget the Banquet on Saturday night!!! Free food and beer!

In closing i just want to personally thank everything Tommy and the Nunez Family has done for the Hispanic / Latino Culture through basketball. And as many Latino players travel to play in tournaments this weekend - I challenge you to HONOR Tommy by not yelling at refs and maybe just thank them for being there at the tournament. And maybe just go out of your way to say hello to someone the way Tommy would greet you when you walked in North HS!

Rest in peace Tommy Nunez.

The world of basketball will never be the same without you and we aspire to do what you did as well.

As we approach the 30th Annual Las Vegas Latino Hoops Classic, I just want to take time to look back to 1996 where it all started. As an inspiring college / pro basketball referee, I attended a referee Camp in Las Vegas. My father went with me (mom made him go with me even though I was 25 years old) The camp location was Dula Gymnasium (Las Vegas Parks & Recreation) it must be said that both my parents were professional recreators each working for LA County Parks & Recreation for 30 plus years. As I was in camp, my father went to talk with the staff at Dula, later that day he told me that the gym was only $20 per hour to rent. That’s all I needed to get the idea in my head and a few months later the 1st Annual Las Vegas Latino Hopps Classic started. Now as we embark on the 30th Annual Tournament I must give a shout out to my father for being an amazing father and grandfather. Most of all, (I followed in parents’ footsteps and worked in recreation as well for close to 30 years) we all owe a debt to him for taking the initial steps in getting this tournament started.

This past June my father joined my mom as the Basketball Angels called him home, many of you met my father in the early years of the tournament. His guidance and support have helped me get to this 30th Annual Tournament. Now as I am grandfather myself, I look forward to another 30 years, my daughter Alexus will continue to be my “right hand” and I can’t wait till my grandkids play in the HS division. The LBA & Guerrero Family thank all the participants over the years, and we are proud of what we have accomplished and continue to accomplish.

Safe travels and we will see you next week!
