Pitchers have made or starting to make the adjustment to the new breed of “launch angle” style hitters. In the past, a pitcher wanted to create depth to their pitches down in the zone (sinker / slider) . That depth and downward plane of the pitch has left a lot of pitchers vulnerable to a high launch angle hitter, especially one with elite pitch selection (there’s not a lot of those guys). Recently, you have seen pitchers start to counter this theory by elevating 4-Seam fastballs at the very top of the zone. A seemingly more “flat” pitch that can and will counter-effect the high launch angle swing. With the extreme velocity in today’s game combined with many hitters wanting to sell out to achieve a high launch angle you will see a lot of talented hitters struggle making adjustments when the pitchers mix up their game plans to include “flat” pitches high in the zone. Changing eye level, velocity, and location is just as effective to a pitcher as sheer stuff. Especially against a one-trick pony (high angle swing). Remember: the launch angle theory is completely reliant on which plane the delivered pitch is coming to you on. What if it’s not coming to you on such a downward plane? What if there isn’t much depth or tilt to the pitch? Let’s give pitchers credit here, it’s now their turn to make the adjustments and they will. Hitters: stay well rounded and well trained. Challenge your barrel control to every part of the zone. Practice the high pitch in all training and as always challenge yourself with timing and pitch selection adjustments.
