IMO-The best villain ever.
William Smith, born March 24, 1933, in Columbia, Missouri, was a prolific American actor known for his imposing physical presence and versatile performances across a wide range of genres. Smith's career spanned over seven decades, earning him a reputation as one of Hollywood's most enduring and versatile character actors.
Smith's early life was marked by athletic prowess. He was a competitive bodybuilder and champion arm-wrestler, which contributed to his rugged, muscular persona. This physicality made him a natural fit for action roles and westerns. Smith began his acting career in the early 1940s as a child actor, appearing in uncredited roles in films like "The Ghost of Frankenstein" (1942). After serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, he returned to Hollywood with a renewed focus on acting.
One of Smith's most iconic roles came in the 1970s when he starred as Falconetti in the television miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man" (1976). His portrayal of the sadistic antagonist earned critical acclaim and solidified his status as a memorable villain in television history. Smith's ability to convey menace and complexity made him a standout performer in a variety of roles.
Smith's versatility was evident in his extensive filmography, which included roles in classic westerns like "Any Which Way You Can" (1980) alongside Clint Eastwood, and in the biker film "Run, Angel, Run!" (1969). His work in genre films, including horror and science fiction, showcased his adaptability and enduring appeal.
In addition to his acting career, Smith was known for his intellectual pursuits. He held a master's degree in Russian Studies and was fluent in several languages, including Russian, French, and German. This scholarly background added depth to his on-screen characters, making his performances all the more compelling.
William Smith continued to work in film and television well into his later years, demonstrating his passion for the craft. He passed away on July 5, 2021, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and a body of work that spans the breadth of Hollywood history.
