Ever wonder how the Hobey Baker Award got its name? 🏒

When the award was being created, four hockey greats were considered: Frankie Brimsek, Frank "Moose" Goheen, John Mariucci, and Hobey Baker.

But after learning more about Hobey’s story, the choice became clear. The committee unanimously voted to name college hockey’s new award after Hobart “Hobey” Amory Baker.

And in 1981, the first Hobey Baker Award was presented to Neal Broten.

More than four decades later, the name and the legacy behind it live on.

A goalie knows a thing or two about handling pressure.

For McKenna Underwood, it came down to staying calm, taking a breath, and resetting when things didn’t go her way. That steady presence, paired with the energy she brought as a captain, made her someone her teammates and younger players could look up to.

John’s impact reached well beyond his own team.

Throughout his career at Seton Hall Prep, he earned every opportunity through hard work, discipline, and a team-first approach. But what really stood out was how he gave back, volunteering his time with sled hockey teams and organizations supporting athletes with disabilities.

Being named a High School Character Award recipient recognized not only the player and teammate John was, but the person he was away from the rink.

For Bridget O’Brien, character was about showing who you are through the way you lead, on and off the ice.

As team captain at Rogers, she helped guide a young roster while setting the standard through her voice, effort, and example. More importantly, she helped build a culture that will continue long after her time with the program.

Four years of showing up and putting in the work.

Drew earned recognition as a High School Character Award recipient after stepping into an important leadership role as assistant captain. With a roster full of underclassmen, he became someone the younger players could watch, learn from, and count on.

Consistency was his thing, and his team was better for it. 🏒
