💙 The Story of Statia's Famous Blue Beads
Long before modern tourism, St. Eustatius was one of the busiest trading ports in the Caribbean. In the 17th and 18th centuries, ships from around the world passed through the island carrying goods, including beautiful cobalt-blue glass beads.
Over time, some of these beads were lost or discarded and eventually washed ashore. Enslaved Africans and island residents collected and treasured them, and they became woven into Statia's culture and history.
Today, finding an authentic Statia blue bead is considered incredibly rare, and the beads have become a symbol of the island's rich heritage and resilience.
