If your child has cried in swim lessons⊠this is for you.
There are two kinds of cries.
Fear.
And frustration.
One means stop.
One means grow.
The hardest part for parents isnât the skill.
Itâs sitting in the middle and not knowing which one it is.
Matelynâs story is a reminder:
Progress doesnât always look peaceful.
Sometimes the breakthrough comes right after the part that makes you question everything.
If youâre in that space right now: pause before you panic.
And instructors: share this with the families who need to hear it.
Save this for the next lesson that feels heavier than you expected. đ€

The words we use after a lesson matter more than we realize.
Children build identity through repetition.
Through tone.
Through the way we narrate their hard moments.
We donât deny that something stretched them.
We just donât build their story around fear.
Save this for the next time your heart feels heavy walking to the car. đ©”
Moms â keep this close.
Instructors â share this with your families.
And send it to someone who needs the reminder.

He said, âNo.â
I said, âYes, you can.â
And before I could even finish the sentence⊠he was flying across the pool like a little superhero.
Sometimes kids donât need a new ability.
They just need someone to believe itâs already in them.
One âyes, you canâ can turn into super speed real quick. đ

Winter break doesnât mean survival skills have to fade!
Try these three things at home to keep your little ones prepared all year long.
1. Always pour water over their head while bathing or showering.
2. Show your kids videos of them swimming! Help their brain remember, âI know how to do thisâ.
3. Donât replace survival swim with random swim instruction during time off. If your instructor is taking time off this winter itâs best to take a break with them OR find another instructor with the same qualifications. Mixing methods WILL confuse kids!

Letâs talk about the controversy behind group classes —ïž
Youâll often hear survival swim instructors emphasize the importance of private lessons and theyâre right. One-on-one instruction is crucial during a childâs initial survival swim training.
So then why do we offer group classes at all?
Because they become just as important AFTER that foundation is built.
In group classes, students practice real-life swimming with their peers. They learn what it feels like to share the water, take turns, wait, watch, and engage in a more dynamic environment. They also learn from one another. As instructors, we can explain and model skills but sometimes seeing another child do it is what truly bridges the gap.
Parents often wonder when their child will start using their arms. And the answer is: when their body is developmentally ready to do it safely and effectively not based on age or a rushed timeline.
Thatâs why group classes matter. This is where the transition happens. Once students have a strong survival foundation, we begin introducing strokes in a way that supports strength, coordination, and confidence. And you donât even need to take them to another swim school!
This is where everything starts to come together.
