I got to spend last weekend learning from Robin Brueckmann, a US Paralympic competitor and Grand Prix dressage rider. This was an incredible experience that came with many new friends. Huge thanks to Melissa Ellis and Colleen Price for facilitating a lead line ride for me. I have barely sat on horses in the past three years, and I have refused to sit on any horses I don’t know. After a couple of days of observing, it was clear to me that Melissa’s horses are wonderful, so we gave it a go. I can only last about 15 minutes in the saddle, but it’s still the only place I feel whole and normal. One evening, after clinic hours, Bailey let me work through my anxiety about taking this calculated risk, and Briar (pictured) marched me around in the walk the next day during the clinic so that Robin could see me ride.

I also had the (terrifying) opportunity to teach a USDF Bronze Medal dressage rider for two days. Terrifying, because this is more advanced than I’ve ever ridden. She had very little Centered Riding knowledge, but was very receptive to trying new things, and we got her and her gorgeous mare (also pictured) more balanced, lighter, and really working together. It was fabulous to witness!!

Welcome Red (25) and Duke (30 something) to the farm. They’ve been pasture buddies for 20+ years, so they understandably came as a package deal. Red will get worked into the lesson program as a beginner horse, and Duke will enjoy retirement and grooming.

We’re hiring! Specifically for Thursday and Saturday morning feed shifts, which would be about 6 hours a week. Our current crew member has been offered the opportunity of a lifetime, so we are looking for someone to start training ASAP, and take over shifts in July. $14/hr. Starting pay. Must be reliable, self motivated, have attention to detail, and have good horse handling skills. Located south of Lawrence, near Lone Star. Text or call 785-393-4852 to set up an interview.

Logan, you’re a legend. Today we said goodbye to you, at the ridiculous age of 22. Thank you for raising the kittens, and for all the snuggles and smiles over the years. We will miss your daily attempts to unalive us by always being in the way. ❤️

Your sweet soul was on this Earth for less than a year. You went from a worried little guy that I didn’t see for two days after bringing you to the farm, to the most lovable and loving creature I’ve known. I called you a bag of purr, because you loved to be snuggled, and always had the motor running. Even today when we said goodbye. We’ve seen this movie, when your sister succumbed to the feline leukemia. We already knew the ending. Thank you for the smiles, the love, and the laughs. You are missed by so many.

WHEW!!! That storm got INTENSE for a bit. The horses told me that we were never in serious danger. I look to them during storms, knowing their behavior will tell me if storms are getting worse, and when the worst has passed. Through it all, one of our trusted lesson horses stood out in his pasture grazing. He finally turned tail to the wind when it got bad (possible 70mph gusts) but never headed for the shelter. When my bluebird parents started arriving with food for the brood, I knew we were in the clear. Thanks to everyone for checking in with me!
