Không có mùi bánh chưng sôi ngoài bếp của bà.
Không có tiếng mẹ gọi con vào ăn miếng dưa hành.
Không có cha ngồi lặng lẽ xem bản tin cuối năm như mọi khi.

Chỉ có hai vợ chồng mình và bốn đứa nhỏ, trong một căn nhà xa quê,
vừa chuẩn bị mâm cơm ngày Tết,
vừa cố gắng tạo cho các con một không khí thật ấm áp —
nhưng trong lòng thì vẫn có một khoảng trống rất khó gọi tên.

Đây đã là cái Tết thứ 3 gia đình mình không được về bên ông bà, họ hàng.
Ba năm — không quá dài, nhưng đủ để nỗi nhớ nhà trở thành một phần trong nhịp sống,
Đang cười với tụi nhỏ,
mà lòng thì lặng đi vì nhớ mẹ, nhớ cha.

Ở xa rồi mới hiểu:
nhà không chỉ là một nơi chốn,
mà là nơi trái tim mình luôn hướng về —
dù mình đang xây dựng tổ ấm mới ở một vùng đất khác.

Mình tin ngoài kia, có rất nhiều gia đình Việt giống như tụi mình:
vợ chồng, con cái quây quần,
nhưng trong tim vẫn mang theo hình bóng quê nhà.

So here we are again…
our little family stepping into another Lunar New Year far from home.

No longer the gentle sound of grandma’s bánh chưng simmering in the kitchen.
No more mom calling everyone in to eat pickled onions with a warm bowl of rice.
No more dad sitting quietly, watching the final news of the year, just like he always did.

Now it is just my husband, me, and our four children,
in a house far away from everything familiar —
trying our best to create a warm, joyful Tết for our kids,
while quietly carrying a kind of emptiness we don’t quite know how to name.

This is already our third Tết away from our parents and relatives.
Three years — not very long,
yet long enough for homesickness to become part of our everyday rhythm.
Sometimes I’m smiling with the children,
yet inside my heart softly aches for my mom and dad.

Only when you live far away do you truly understand:
home is not just a place —
it is where your heart always belongs,
no matter how far you go.

I know we are not alone.
There are so many Vietnamese families around the world
celebrating Tết with their spouses and children,
while still carrying their homeland in their hearts.
