Most people close their eyes when a punch comes at their face. đź‘€

This drill fixes that. Jab comes, slip. Cross comes, slip the other way. Eyes open, hands up.

After enough reps they stop flinching and start reading it. Shoulder moves, they move.

Listen to that room. 🥋

A full class of kids, every one of them calling the strikes back as they throw them. This is the MMA striking pattern they’ll be testing on, and nobody’s drifting off.

Keeping a group this size locked in takes real skill and real professionalism. And when kids say it out loud, they learn it twice.

Honestly, this is our favorite part of the job.

Kids Night Out got a little spooky this time. đź‘»

Every year our kids get to wrap the black belt candidates up as mummies, and every year it’s one of the best parts of the night. The kids love it. The candidates love it too, even if they won’t admit it.

We do it on purpose. These candidates are the leaders of the school and the ones our kids look up to every class. Nights like this give them a chance to just hang out, laugh, and get to know each other off the mat.

Next Kids Night Out is coming up. Don’t let your kids miss it.

Little Dragons, your top secret mission is a go. 🥋

Right in the middle of belt testing, we send them off the mat with one job: find Mom, Dad, big sister, Grandma, whoever showed up for them, and give them a giant hug.

Those people drove them to class, sat through every practice, and came out on test day to cheer. The kids should feel that, and they should say thank you for it.

We practice gratitude the same way we practice kicks. On purpose, over and over, until it sticks.

Also, nobody has ever failed this mission. Not once. ❤️

Five years old, every parent in the room watching, and the hand still shoots straight up. 🥋

At belt testing, our advanced Little Dragons turn around and face Mom and Dad to show them their basics. Then we start asking questions, and they have to answer out loud.

Their parents are watching. So is every other parent in the building. That’s a lot of eyes on a little kid.

They raised their hands anyway. Loud voices, sharp stances, nobody hiding behind the kid next to them.

We practice this stuff every class so it’s there when it counts. Testing is one of the biggest days of our year, and watching these kids own it never gets old.

Confidence shows up when the pressure does.

Your kid gets corrected and falls apart. Arms crossed, eyes on the floor, checked out.

I see it on the mat all the time. A simple correction lands in their head as “I’m bad at this,” and sometimes even “I’m a bad kid.” Once that happens, they’re gone.

Being coachable doesn’t show up on its own. Kids learn it, and most of that learning happens at home.

Talk about what they did and leave who they are out of it. “Your shoes are in the hallway again” gives them something to fix. “You’re so lazy” gives them nothing. Then let them fix it right there so they learn a correction means get better.

And let them watch you take one. Ask someone what you could do better and say thank you when they tell you. Your kid is watching how you handle it way more than they’re listening to what you say.

A kid who hears correction as help is going to be hard to stop. 🥋

📍 Want help building that in your kid? Our families in Leander, Liberty Hill, and Georgetown start with a trial class. Link in bio.

September’s testing results are in, and we’re so proud of this crew. 🥋

Every one of you put in the extra reps, fixed the little things, and showed up on test day even with nerves. That new belt is proof of how you trained when nobody was watching.

Parents, thank you for getting them here week after week.

New month, new belt, same effort. Let’s go, October. 🙏

I don’t know if I’m doing any of this right.

A mom sat in our lobby last week and said that to KJN Michael. We hear some version of it almost every week.

Bedtime battles. Saying “put your shoes away” for the fifth time before dinner has even started. Lying awake wondering if you were too hard on them today or not hard enough.

Most parents who walk into our school in Leander aren’t looking for someone to fix their kid. They want one more adult saying the same thing they’re already saying at home. Your kid hears “finish what you started” from you at the dinner table, then hears it again from their instructor on the mat. That’s usually when it finally sticks.

You were never supposed to hold the line by yourself.

If you’re in Leander, Liberty Hill, or Georgetown and could use some backup, comment BACKUP and our team will reach out about getting your kid on the mat. 🥋

A huge congratulations to SBN Kaylynne Moore! 🥋

She was tasked with completing a half marathon as part of her tryout to test for 4th Degree, and she got it done.

Now one might ask, why a half marathon? Because 4th Degree is the first master rank, and mastery starts with yourself. So why not show it by doing something you’ve never done before? 13.1 miles doesn’t care what belt you’re wearing. You put in the work or you don’t, and she did.

That’s the thing about a master rank. Nobody can run the miles for you. It’s just you and whatever is going on in your head when it gets hard.

Now she has her sights set on California, where the test will be held.

Thank you for giving it your best, SBN! Leading by example is the best way to lead! 🙏

Focus your eyes. Focus your mind. Focus your body.

Those are the three rules we teach our Little Dragons right alongside every kick and punch. We use them as the go to tool when a kid is stuck, when they’re bouncing around or losing their spot in a drill. Break it down to eyes, mind, body, and they’ve got something to reset to.

That’s the piece that carries past the mat. The technique is the vehicle. Concentration is what actually moves with them into school, into homework, into listening at home.

It looks simple from the outside. It’s not. Watch how hard some of these kids are working just to hold still and pay attention.

📍 Come see how we teach it, link in bio.
