DSD Subspecies Spotlight:

The "Tav"

Taverner’s Cackling Geese are one of the recognized subspecies of Cackling Goose and is the largest of the four. These birds have a long, fairly slender neck, square shaped body, and a large, round head with a short bill. Taverner’s breed primarily across western and northern Alaska before migrating south along the Pacific Flyway, with wintering birds found from the Pacific Northwest through California.

In the field, Taverner’s can be easy to confuse with smaller Canada Geese or other Cackling Goose subspecies. Their broad wings, long neck, and distinctive head shape are key features to look for, especially when birds are mixed together. Like the other Cackling Goose subspecies, knowing the bird you're after, and matching your spread accordingly, can make a big difference when hunting these unique Pacific Flyway geese.

Specks are on the move!

Reports are starting to roll in from friends across the country who are seeing the first migrating White-fronted Geese of the year.

In typical fashion, the earliest travelers are Pacific Flyway specklebellies, with birds showing up along the coast and inland across Washington and Oregon. Sightings are already reaching as far south as Klamath and into California.

Moving east, the Central Flyway is beginning to see its first arrivals as well, with reports of family groups of white-fronts showing up south of Calgary, Alberta.

Farther east in Saskatchewan, specks are just beginning to push below the tree line of the boreal forest in areas like Loon Lake, with scattered reports of flocks as far south as Swift Current.

White-fronts always seem to lead the way and kick off the fall migration. The first reports are in, birds are moving, and we can’t wait to see what the coming weeks bring!
