Deer season is in full swing, with many people already bringing in their first harvests of the year!

As you prepare to hit the field this season, don’t forget to review the 2026-2027 Hunting and Trapping Guide, especially if you are hunting in the CWD Surveillance Zone.

🐈‍⬛ NEW KENTUCKY HUNTING RULE: NIGHTTIME BOBCAT HUNTING COMING THIS WINTER

A new Kentucky law will allow hunters to pursue bobcats at night beginning this winter unless a specific area is closed under other hunting restrictions.

Kentucky Fish & Wildlife says the 2026-27 bobcat season runs from November 21 through February 28, but nighttime hunting will be permitted December 1 through February 28.

There are several important restrictions:

🔹 Hunters may take one bobcat at night.
🔹 A total of three bobcats may be harvested with a firearm under the overall bag limit.
🔹 Nighttime hunting is not allowed in a county or area while a deer or elk firearm season is open.
🔹 Artificial light, night vision, thermal and infrared technology may be used to make wildlife visible at night.
🔹 Those devices cannot be connected to or cast from a mechanized vehicle.
🔹 Different equipment restrictions apply on public and private land.
🔹 Harvested bobcats must still be reported through Kentucky’s Telecheck system.
🔹 A bobcat permit is required.

Hunters will need to pay attention to temporary restrictions tied to deer and elk firearm seasons and to any additional rules governing specific public hunting areas.

The change has sparked discussion among wildlife experts, including concerns about whether Kentucky has enough population data to determine how much additional harvest the state’s bobcat population can sustain.

Kentucky Fish & Wildlife says the nighttime opportunity has been requested by hunters for years.
