Honesty

If you ask, most people will say they prefer to hear the truth.

There is a children’s book called “There’s no such thing as a dragon.” In the story, a boy tells his mom that he sees a small dragon sitting on the kitchen table and eating his breakfast. She assures him that dragons do not exist. And, if dragons don’t exist, then you cannot tell it to stop eating your breakfast or to get off the kitchen table.

The dragon continues causing problems that are ignored. And, each time the dragon is ignored, it grows. Eventually, the dragon grows so big it walks off with the house, wearing it like an outfit.

It isn’t until the dragon is acknowledged that it begins to shrink. And, small dragons are easier to handle than large ones!

We cannot fix an issue or problem we pretend doesn’t exist. Instead, the problem grows to such a size that it could devour ourselves and our family.

When we confront dragons, they shrink in size.

Slay the dragon, get the gold!

Next week is our quarterly belt test at Arc Systems Martial Arts!

At the end of each month students have the chance to earn a black stripe on their belt by demonstrating “Black Belt” behavior at home and school, AND showing understanding in their Martial Arts techniques.

Every quarter students that have earned each of their monthly stripes will be promoted to their next belt rank! *Time between ranks increases at higher levels.

Testing will be conducted during class time on June 22nd and 23rd.

Belt promotions will be made in classes on June 24th and 25th.

Students should wear their full uniform to class June 22nd through June 25th.

Integrity

Tony Robbins mentions that the word integrity shares the same prefix with the word from math class, “integer.” An integer is any whole number. Someone who has integrity is an undivided person, a whole person.

In this old story, an emperor has no son as his successor, so he decides to find the next emperor among the children in the city. Each child was given a seed with the task of growing the best plant possible. This would demonstrate their potential in how well they could rule the country.
After one year, each child was to return and show the progress they made. Plants of all sizes were brought before the emperor. Finally, one boy approached the emperor with a pot filled with dirt. “No matter what I did, the seed would not grow.” The emperor smiled. Once a seed is boiled it will no longer grow. Before I gave you all the seeds I had them boiled. Everyone that brought a plant here has been dishonest, because none of these plants came from the seeds I gave you. A ruler must be honest. You and your family will move into the palace, where you will begin training to become the next emperor.

Arc Systems Martial Arts is a Black Belt School.
Our goal is that each student becomes a black belt in Martial Arts and in life.
On the way to black belt students cultivate more than just focus, self-discipline and confidence.
They develop a version of themselves that wouldn’t exist otherwise.
Set the goal of becoming a Black Belt.
Not for the belt, but for what it will make of you to achieve it.

Perseverance

Both Zig Ziglar and Mark Batterson each tell the well-known story of the Chinese bamboo tree.

The farmer will go out and plant the crop and take care of it all year. At the end of the first year no sign of growth shows.

The next year the farmer continues to take care of it. At the end of the second year, still, nothing happens.

The farmer continues taking care of the plants for five years without seeing any sign of growth.

Then, in the fifth year, in a period of about six weeks, the plants grow about ninety feet high!

The question with the lesson is “did the plants grow in the six weeks or in the five years?”

Answer - five years.

It can be this way in life. We start to learn a new endeavor and wonder “how long is this going to take?”

Since things do take time, maybe the better question is, “what would allow me to do this without worrying about time?”

Remember why you started.

Whether one is discussing a relationship, job, or hobby, we can hopefully remember a time when we approached it with excitement, gratitude, and wonder.

Then, sometimes, we get lost in the daily happenings. We forget why we started.

Pursue the good. Do not forget the love you had at first and why you started.

Last week some of our students were promoted!

Everyone is applying themselves and being consistent!

May Announcements:

-We will be open this Memorial Day.

-Our monthly testing evaluation for stripes will be the 25th (Memorial Day) through the 28th.

-Students NOT in attendance on Monday the 25th may attend another class time throughout the week.

Intensity

None of us can go 100% all the time. Some days we are running at 2 out of 10, while other days we feel like a 9 out of 10.

Each day our best is different. This is normal, because each day is different. Some days are more challenging than others.

Intensity can be compensated for with consistency.

Much of life is about showing up.

Few are the number of games one wins by NOT taking one’s turn.

When it’s all said and done with, let the ledger show your wins and let it show your losses, but don’t let it show you didn’t play.

Allow yourself to show up with the energy level you have.

Consistency over intensity.
