As of today, the Atlantic hasn’t produced a single hurricane this year — the latest date on record without one, and counting.
Five tropical storms have formed (Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard), but none has crossed the 74 mph threshold to become a hurricane. For East Coast surfers, that’s meant a quiet year for hurricane groundswell — most of what we’ve tracked this season has come from other sources.
Meanwhile, it’s been a different story out west: the Pacific saw two Category 5 hurricanes this year, and Hurricane Lala made history as the first hurricane to directly strike Hawaii’s Big Island since 1871. California hasn’t seen landfalls, but it’s felt the swell — one south swell after another rolling in from storms off western Mexico, keeping the West Coast firing while the Atlantic stayed still.
