Shale Hollow Park will be closed October 28 โ€“ 29 to allow a contractor to remove several hazardous trees around the natural play area and McKay Lodge. The trees are affected with needle cast, a fungal disease among spruce trees that causes the needles to turn brown and fall.

UPDATE: The park is back open as of 5 pm. Be sure to also check out other nearby parks like Deer Haven Park or Emily Traphagen to help prevent overcrowding!

Shale Hollow Park is closed temporarily this afternoon, Oct. 17, due to overcrowding. We will be able to reopen once the crowds thin out. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Welcome to Shale Hollow Park! We appreciate your patience as we navigate record-setting attendance during the summer of 2020. Our park police have been monitoring the parking availability and we apologize to anybody who has needed to wait to enter the park.

Shale Hollow regularly reaches its peak attendance from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., meaning that visiting at this time may mean waiting 10-15 minutes for an available parking spot.

We also want to remind our visitors that dogs are not permitted on the overlook trail or in the natural exploration area. This is for the safety of both our guests and for the wildlife that have built their nests around the trail.

Thank you all for your patience and we hope to see you out on the trails soon!

Beautiful pic of the creek, Ed! Thanks.

Shale Hollow park with the clouds receding will be full of stark shadows from the overhanging trees. Its creek, full of Ohio shale, widens enough to truly appreciate its view; close your eyes and its flow will send its distinct babbling to your ears.

Please like and share to see more awesome Ohio geology.
