Still seeing a lot of bucks not leaving the bedding area until after dark. It’s been a weird year. The next good rainfall along with some cooler temps will be what it takes to get the rut going in a lot of places! 🇺🇸🦌

The bucks are really starting to put their noses to work, using the rising thermals to scent check for does. You can see right on the edge of the fog as it’s pulling up the hillside! 🇺🇸🦌

Over the years I’ve found that the best conditions for me have been during those cold and calm mornings in late October. Sunny days seem to be better than the cloudy ones. The time period from 8am to 11am has been the best! 🇺🇸🦌

From what the cameras are showing me, first light and last light are your best time periods to kill a mature buck right now. Bucks are still hanging tight to core areas but they are venturing a little more during the nighttime hours. 🇺🇸🦌

If I’m hunting a scrape or in most situations during the rut, I’d rather hunt a location with consistent doe activity than to chase random buck pictures on trail cameras. Remember, does are more consistent in their travels than bucks. They are easier to pattern during the rut. In the next few weeks, bucks are going to start putting more focus on does than anything else. Heck with those random big bucks pics! Consistent daytime doe pictures mean you are in the money this time of year! 🇺🇸🦌

There’s something about October 17th coupled with a cold front! Mature bucks were on the move from sun-up to sunset. My son and I had some great action this afternoon. Look closely how this buck’s wide rack blends in with the forest floor! 🇺🇸🦌
