MONDAY WITH MELINDA ❤️

I love hearing from our guests. At the top of the list lately are compliments about our serving staff and their commitment to hospitality. A close second is how much you love our food. And third is how clean we are as a Lewiston business.

But getting every plate right, every time, takes training.

Legends has grown to 32 employees—some with years of experience and others working their very first job. Everyone has to start somewhere. Our GM James reminds new hires that he started his restaurant career as a host. James is doing remarkable things at Legends!

For months we've been building recipe books, food-build binders and training guides, creating systems to best track food cost and waste and so much more. Next Monday, we're investing in a full day of hands-on kitchen training, cooking nearly our entire menu together. Its rare to have all cooks on the same shift, but we are making it happen with a test day.

We're also investing in people individually. John, our prep specialist, brings decades of old-school kitchen knowledge from his years running the Ramada kitchen during its hay days. This week, Sean—an amazing new employee—is working side-by-side with him early mornings to learn cooking from scratch tips.

Recently, a guest kindly messaged me because their poutine was different. A newer employee had used shaved steak instead of our bourbon steak tips. The guest said it was still delicious—but it wasn't correct.

And they were right.

I appreciated their kindness and patience. Mistakes are part of learning, but we're working hard to build a training program so we don't have to rely on your patience.

And here's the most important part:

We can make these investments because this community continues to fill our seats.

You're helping us train people, give someone their first opportunity, develop great employees and pass knowledge from one generation to the next.

For that, we are incredibly grateful.

Your support allows us to invest in our people. Our job is to make sure you see that investment on your plate and in your experience. Thank you again for believing in us. You are the reason we are here.

A little personal note from me…

Politics can be hard. Pizza and a conversation don’t need to be.❤️🍕

I’ve always believed that change begins when one person is willing to say, *something could be better.* But real change doesn’t happen because of one person. It happens when people show up, listen, ask questions, share their experiences, and become part of the conversation.

You don’t have to agree on everything to sit at the same table.

Today, Eryn Soule is willing to sit at that table, listen, answer questions and hear from the people in our community.

So whether you come with a question, an opinion, some curiosity—or you just want a slice of pizza on a beautiful afternoon—you’re welcome.

Community starts with showing up. Conversation is a pretty good place to begin.

Where were you when the world stopped turning?

I know exactly where I was.

I was many miles from home, in Aruba, attending a convention with an insurance agency. Many people know that in addition to Legends, I also own an insurance agency.

We had been celebrating and enjoying our time together when the news began to come in.

I remember seeing the first images and struggling to comprehend what I was watching. My first thought was that it must have been a small private plane that had somehow gone off course. How horrific.

And then the second plane hit.

I remember the disbelief in my own mind. How could this happen twice in one day?

Then I looked at Dan.

His eyes understood before my mind was ready to.

This was intentional.

We were thousands of miles from home, and suddenly home felt very far away. With air travel brought to a halt, there were no planes coming to take us back. We ended up staying in Aruba for another seven days, waiting, hoping and praying for everyone back home.

I remember the flight when we were finally able to return. The plane was quiet as we boarded. We looked at one another differently, almost examining each other. I imagine everyone's mind was forming its own thoughts and opinions about what we had just experienced.

My thoughts kept returning to the people whose lives were lost that day and to the families they left behind. I spent much of that flight home praying for them.

We were all coming home, but none of us were coming home quite the same.

Like so many Americans, I will never forget where I was or how that day felt.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the lives that were lost, the families whose lives changed forever, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the ordinary people who demonstrated extraordinary courage.

September 11, 2001. We remember. 🇺🇸
