NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK TIP #6: An ECOS Matters - Use It

Q: What is an Engine Cut-Off Switch (ECOS) on a boat?
A: It’s a lanyard or wireless device worn by the operator that automatically kills the engine if they’re thrown from the helm - preventing a dangerous, uncontrolled runaway vessel.

Federal law (effective 2021) requires ECOS use on most recreational motorized vessels under 26 feet. Despite this, many boaters still skip it. Clip it on before you start the engine. Every. Single. Time.

At Freedom Boat Club, ECOS use and all federal compliance requirements are covered in every member training. We make sure you know the rules - and why they matter.

👉 Share this — a lot of boaters still don’t know this federal requirement.

📝 NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK TIP #5: File a Float

Q: What should you tell someone before every boat trip?
A: File a float plan - and make sure a trusted person on shore has it.

A complete float plan includes: • Your name and emergency contact • Vessel description and registration number • Departure point and destination • Planned route • Number of passengers and their names • Expected return time If you don’t return on schedule, your float plan gives search and rescue a critical head start.

Freedom Boat Club encourages this habit for every member and of course our dock team will be watching for you

Q: Is it illegal to operate a boat while drinking?
A: Yes - Boating Under the Influence (BUI) is illegal in all 50 states and carries penalties similar to DUI. 🚫

And it’s even more dangerous than most people realize. Sun, heat, wind, and wave motion amplify alcohol’s effects on the water - impairing judgment, balance, and reaction time faster than on land.

This National Safe Boating Week designate a sober operator. Every trip. No exceptions.

Freedom Boat Club reinforces responsible boating with every member from day one — because getting home safely is the only acceptable outcome.

🛡️ NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK TIP #3: Prepare for the Unexpected.

Q: What should you check before every boat trip?
A: Your safety gear - every single time.

A proper pre-departure checklist includes: • Life jackets for every passenger • First aid kit stocked and accessible • Fire extinguisher charged and within reach • Visual distress signals (flares) on board • Phone with emergency contacts • Anchor and throwable flotation device

Emergencies happen fast. Preparation is the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

At Freedom Boat Club, our fleet is maintained with all required and recommended safety equipment - inspected and ready before every rental. And our orientations make sure you know where everything is.

👀 NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK TIP #2: Always Pay Attention & Maintain Full Visibility

Q: What causes most boating collisions?
A: Operator inattention - not weather, not equipment failure.

On the water, distractions are dangerous. No phone at the helm. No impaired sightlines. Slow down when visibility drops. Watch for swimmers, other vessels, and submerged hazards at all times.

At Freedom Boat Club, we build situational awareness into every member’s orientation. Navigation rules, reading conditions, and safe operation habits - all covered before you ever head out alone.

Because being a confident boater means being an attentive one. 👉

NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK TIP #1: Always Wear a Life Jacket

Q: When should you wear a life jacket on a boat?
A: Every single time — no exceptions.

Most boating fatalities involve victims who were NOT wearing a personal flotation device. A life jacket stored in a compartment cannot save you. It must be ON your body to work.

This National Safe Boating Week , we’re joining the National Safe Boating Council in spreading this message: Wear It.

At Freedom Boat Club, member safety starts before the engine does. Our team provides a complete safety orientation on every vessel — including proper life jacket fit and requirements — so you’re always protected and always informed.
