If you want to improve your turn on the forehand or your turn on the haunches, the secret might actually be hiding in your reinback.
Too often, riders treat turns and backing up as completely separate exercises that might have no connection at all... but when used intentionally, the reinback is one of the most powerful tools we have to organize the horseโs body, clarify our aids, and establish true postural balance. (Oh wait... like half-halt? YEP).
A correct reinback requires the horse to step backward with rhythm, self-carriage, and engagement of their balancing muscles, rather than bracing against the bit or other aids. Most importantly, focusing on the reinback teaches the horse the fundamental mechanics of shifting their weight. This awareness and ability to adjust their balance is something the horse carries with them even outside of a full reinback, serving as a vital foundation that is necessary for helping carry the horse through all movements in general. It also gives the rider the proper ability to effectively rebalance (half-halt) the horse inside of, and between, other movements.
Before a horse can successfully turn around the forehand or the haunches, they need straightness, engagement, and appropriate weight distribution. The reinback acts as a diagnostic tool, highlighting any crookedness or stiffness so you can sort it out before asking for a turn. Correctly reining back requires clear, synchronized timing of your seat, leg, and rein. When your horse learns to respond to light, organized aids in the reinback, those exact same communication aids translate seamlessly into the conversation needed for your turns.
If your turns feel heavy, sticky, or disconnected, stop drilling the turn itself. Step back (literally and figuratively), work on establishing harmony, organization, and weight-shifting through a correct reinback, and watch how much lighter and clearer your turn around the forehand and haunches (and your overall riding) become.
