Beretta Review:

I have to admit that I have a couple more years as a professional soldier than the adoption date of the M9 Beretta, and when I heard it was coming, I went out and bought one. I have been issued several, owned several, and did not listen to the criticisms, which were several.

I have been behind one of these guns since 1986, and traded up to a 92FS in 1992, and I still own this pistol. It has been in my hand so often, that all of the bluing has been rubbed off the grip, and the aluminum underneath is now a silver grey.

Let’s face it, they are ugly guns. Ugly, and heavy, and big. They are not nearly as popular as the plastic guns and I think this is because they are truly difficult pistols to shoot well. But, they do really shoot well, crazy well in fact.

Accuracy is important, and it is important to me. Shooting to the sights is the second most important aspect of a combat pistol, only behind reliability, and the Beretta is the most reliable pistol that has ever been made. I have said that I have been behind one of these guns for forty years, and thousands upon thousands of rounds through them, and I have had exactly zero malfunctions. I have seen likely over a million rounds go downrange and have only seen two malfunctions, none of where the fault of the gun. This gun runs.

Enclosed in this review is the full sized APX, which is a true Beretta, as it is big, ugly, and very hard to shoot- but it sure does run, and it sure does hit.

I don’t think there is a better place to post this, as this gem, and the G***k series of pistols are polar opposites. The G***k is spartan and utilitarian, the Browning is hand fit, polished, and magnificent work of art.

I really enjoy shooting this one. It has been worked over by a master gunman.

I do not carry it, unless it is for show and tell range stuff. It can be finicky about what it shoots well, or really at all. I am told that it does not do +P, and that is okay with me, but I have not and will not try it. The big reason that I won’t carry this gun, is that the trigger reset is massively long for combat pistol standards. Because if this, and this alone- if that is the gun that you carry; then practice only with it.

Brownings vs G***ks. I enjoy shooting the Browning, and do not enjoy the G***k. I carry a G***k all the time, but wont carry the Browning. That is about all I have to say about that.

It is very doubtful, that there is anything to say which hasn’t been said a thousand times about a G***k pistol. They are well known, to the point of iconic, and the original, plastic UBER 9.
The superlatives are its simplicity, durability, and that it is a joy to carry. I have never seen one that I considered worn out, even when it was obvious that it had been used hard. They are lightweight and well balanced in the holster, and they are likely the best platform to start a young man on his journey of being useful with a defensive firearm.

My criticisms, are reliability, accuracy, and it is one of few pistols in the world where I will complain about its ergonomics. It is very good to excellent in terms of reliability- but on occasion it will choke- normally because of a magazine issue. One should be an absolutist when it comes to reliability, and this one is very close, but not as naturally reliable as others.

I am fussy- admittedly over fussy about a pistol that strictly shoot to the sights, and none of mine (4) shoot strictly to the sights. Normally, a shade high- which is fine for close work, but for distance, one must apply some Kentucky math, although I will say the Gen 5s are better. The older Generations also could be fussy about ammunition. My original G***k 19 did well with Re*****on 115s, and Federal 147s, and everything else not to standard.

Grip angle, trigger finger placement, slide release button, are not necessarily inferior, but because of these things I must change my approach to hit well. This is one of very few that my normal approach comes up wanting. The G***k is very unforgiving about any lapses in fundamentals.

Still, good guns- I could complain very little about these pistols, if mine shot to the sights. See less

A few things that needed to be said.

Milestones- Observations of a Range Officer Pt 2 – The Arlington Group It is easy to believe that Michael Jordan was born with a basketball in his hand, as he is easily identified as the one who had definitely mastered this craft. The fact is, that he did not, and there was a portion of his life that he had not touched a basketball and was as new to the game as the res...

Practice Continues.

The narrative under the video:

"1s, and 2 and 1s. Trying to be smooth, and fast(ish) while staying behind the sights. I’d say a man that runs faster than he can see, is running faster than he can think, and if so- is going to send stray ones out and about wildly. The purpose of the exercise is to get solid and useful hits. When you run too fast to do this, slow down a notch. " S.R. Hogan, MG, USA (Retired)
