Truth is, there’s room for both ⬇️

When we’re lying on our backs in a Pilates class, we want to understand why we choose one position over another.

In neutral, the spine maintains its natural curves, giving us an opportunity to practice 360° breathing.. allowing the rib cage to expand into the front, sides, and back of the body.

Think of your core like a cylinder: diaphragm on top, pelvic floor on the bottom. When we inhale, the diaphragm descends and the pelvic floor responds, creating a natural pressure system throughout the body.

When we forcefully imprint into the mat, we change that relationship. The pelvis tucks, the low back flattens, and we can lose some of that natural 360° expansion and pelvic floor movement.

That doesn’t make imprint wrong. It’s an incredibly useful tool for certain movements! But we don’t want our bodies to only know one position.

Neutral gives us a place to practice breath, support, and awareness so eventually, our bodies can find that organization without us having to think about it.

Hi! I'm Mandy. I’ve been teaching Pilates since 2003, and after more than 20 years of studying anatomy, yoga, and Pilates, I’ve never seen Pilates more popular than it is today (it's everywhere!!) and it's not going anywhere.

I’m so excited to offer a Mat Pilates instructor certification at The Practice this fall and to share what I’ve spent more than 20 years learning, practicing, and teaching.

For this training, I’ve put my heart and soul into rewriting the curriculum, and it's seriously better than ever. We really dissect the *why* behind the work.. how the body moves, how to teach with intention, and why the health of the spine is so important.

You don’t necessarily have to want to become a teacher to benefit from it. We’ve had people go through the training simply because they wanted to understand their own bodies better.

This will likely be the last one for over a year, so if you've been thinking about becoming a Mat Pilates instructor, I’d love to have you join me! Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions before signing up ☺️

Set yourself apart.

Pilates is everywhere right now—and there are weekend certifications galore. This is not one of those.

This training is immersive, thorough, and designed to give you a real understanding of Pilates, movement, anatomy, and how to actually teach it well. The instructors who come out of these trainings are next level.

The curriculum is fresh, the manual has been completely revised, and I truly believe this is my best work yet. I’ve taken everything I’ve been studying and learning lately—along with 20+ years of experience in anatomy, personal training, yoga, and Pilates—and rolled it into one incredible course.

Whether you want to become a Pilates teacher or simply want to understand Pilates and your own body on a much deeper level, this training is for you.

We will not offer this training again for a while. At this point, I’m not even sure I’ll offer it in 2027.

Just a few spots remain. If you have questions, message us and we can start the conversation.

There’s a place for everyone on that yoga mat.. you just need to show up 🤎

If you’ve ever thought “I’m not a yoga person,” maybe it’s worth asking: what if you just haven’t found your version of yoga yet?

Everyone loves prone series, right? Wrong.

I’ve had so many people tell me that prone is their least favorite, mainly because they don’t think they’re doing it right.. that stops today! 😜

I hear things like:
“I can’t lift very high”
“My p***c bone hurts”
“I feel this all in my low back”

Here’s the thing: you do not need to lift high for prone work to be effective. In fact, trying to lift higher can take you out of the work we’re actually looking for.

Think about getting long through your body first, supporting yourself through your abdominals, and lifting only as high as you can without dumping into your low back.

The goal isn’t the biggest range of motion. It’s control, strength, and moving with intention. A small lift done well will always beat a bigger lift that feels uncomfortable or uncontrolled!

Save this for your next prone exercise and let’s make prone your new favorite 🤸🏼‍♀️

We’re not here to tell you one workout is better than another. If it gets you moving, feeling good in your body, and helps you find a movement practice you actually enjoy, we’re all for it.

But it’s worth talking about what Pilates actually is.

You’ll see the name attached to all kinds of workouts, and while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with those different ways of moving, sometimes the actual method of Pilates gets lost along the way.

Pilates is more than a burn, a sweat, or a list of exercises. It’s a practice rooted in breath, alignment, precision, awareness, and control.

That’s what we love about it! 🤍
