"Should I work out when I'm sick?"
This is a common question, especially this time of year. The answer:
NO! If you're sick, go for a walk, do some movements at home, get sun, stay hydrated, but stay away from the gym. Pushing through the pain and discomfort doesn't make you tough, it makes you an inconsiderate jackass by putting others at the gym at risk of getting what you have. You see, our bodies get stronger and build muscle on our days off. When we work out, we damage our muscles, breaking them down enough to where our bodies send in the troops to heal the damage we put our muscles through. My clients don't want me coming over to workout when I'm sick and I don't want to see them when they are. If you're interested in learning some good movements to do on an off-day, comment 'interested' and I'll get some recommendations off to you! What are some things that you like to do when you're not feeling so great?

"I can fit into my old jeans again!"
"I have more energy!"
"I have more confidence than I ever have!"
"I can go off of my medications!"
These are all things I love hearing from clients- there's one thing a client said to me that hit me different though. This was just last year:
"I feel like I'm a better mother now." Wow. I didn't quite understand what she meant. You see, when someone isn't searching through the cabinets all of the time for something to munch on, their focus remains on what's really important. Family, friends, work, whatever- it changes from person to person.
Getting fit and healthy affects the people around you, too. You can start to be a better mother/father/sibling/friend just by being better to yourself.
Yoga is great.
Pilates is fantastic, it’s one thing I haven’t tried and that will change soon.
Cycling classes are great.
Crossfit is great, regardless of some of the goofy stuff they do.
Poledancing classes are great, however ridiculous it looks.
HIIT classes are great.
Running is great, even though it bores me to hell.
Barre classes are great, unexpected killers as I discovered.
Swimming is great.
Casual walks through a forest preserve are great.
Qi Gong is great.
You see, there are so many ways that we can move our bodies and be active. To find our sense of community and to find mindfulness in ways that we never thought possible. It’s not all about going to the gym and just lifting heavy objects over and over again. Find what moves you, literally and figuratively, and enjoy it. If it’s not your thing, try something else. Keep trying. Beware of trying all of these moves that you see superfit athletes doing on social media. They’re not for most people unless under supervision.
Oh- and anything that says “The [blank] Diet” probably sucks. We’ll talk about that another time.
Go Move.

We can change all of this. Will it be easy? For some of us, sure. For others it takes time, and that's perfectly fine!

Serving sizes are surprisingly small! If you think you're eating healthy, double check how much you're eating! A peanut butter portion is depressingly small- just 2 tablespoons for over 200kcal!

"I hate winter, it's too cold to do anything outside, it gets dark so early"
Oh please, have you ever been skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling? How'd you do that? By bundling the hell up, that's how. You can do the same thing on a bike, whether there's snow or not. This is from last year, right over the WI border.
Leave the excuses at the door and try something new, you might love it.
I love Hanukkah, even though I'm not Jewish. It''s because some of my clients send me home with their homemade noodle kugel! Don't say no to everything unhealthy this holiday season. Families, friends and connections are important for your mental health and your relationships as well. Don't insult grandma, life is about more than just your waistline!

I get asked about motivation a lot. "How do I get motivated?"
It's not about that.
It's about discipline.
Staying disciplined isn't easy, getting motivated is. Being motivated just makes you take that first step- hiring a trainer, joining a gym, dusting off those old P90x dvds.
It's the 2nd, 3rd, 50th, 100th step you take that you take that changes your life. Otherwise you're just wasting your money.
Stay hungry (metaphorically) and keep at it.

This looks excellent! I'd substitute Skyr for the Greek yogurt though- less sugar and more protein!
These quick and easy Cinnamon Roll Overnight Oats are packed with protein and taste just like a cinnamon roll. 😍 Perfect for a healthy, make-ahead breakfast on busy mornings!
