Wait…a game tying 3 run HR in the semi-finals…followed by a freaking walk off grand slam!!! In the SAME inning?! Yes…it happened.
But lemme back up and summarize what brought us to this point. [PSA: long post for recapping a 4 tourney journey]
This is the important showcase year for many of them. June and July are THE months to show off their skills for the college coaches.
We started in early June down in Newberry, and for a variety of circumstances, could only bring 10 girls to play some of the best teams around. Many had P4 stickers already all over their helmets. We had to play some girls out of position with only 10 and it hurt…bad. We got out of there with several competitive games but only one win, and that just wasn’t our thing. But, I think it woke them up to what was needed as a team, and as individuals. Plus, it showed just how important it is to have a complete roster.
We then hit the highly competitive PGF Super Grand in N. GA. Had about 60+ teams in 16U…placed in top 8. Lots of college interest. Had a full and honed roster as well. We saw what they were capable of.
Off to Scenic City…the massive showcase tourney in June. For our 16U division, 122 teams from all over the country…we started a little choppy but then got into a groove and finished top 12. Pretty darn good, but we knew there was still more in them. Spoke with a bunch of return colleges that came to watch them, plus some new ones that started to really follow us.
After a week off, we went to PGF Independence Day showcase in Clearwater. Last year, it was the big IDT tourney in CO, but this yr we decided we’d go to PGF nationals in CA so we’d stay east coast for the 4th.
So, off we went to Clearwater which was a beast of a drive but that’s another story. Again, bad timing gives us only 10 girls. As a coach, knowing the level of competition, and the brutal heat, it was probably gonna be a rough go. Went 2-1 on Friday and knew we had a tough (and early) Sat. ahead. They fought like dogs for the first two games of the day, winning each in one-run battles that had some intense pressure moments where our girls came up big…big pitches, big defensive gems, clutch hits, and selfless ball that earned us two wins. Then, we benefited from a forfeit that allowed everyone to enjoy some R&R and watch some fireworks at night, knowing we had the one seed locked up. And they needed a break. This heat in 90min battles takes its toll.
Sunday, we had to win 3 tough games to win it. We started flat against a team we beat 9-1 when we first arrived, It took awhile to adjust to the slower speed pitcher but they eventually won an ugly game, but we advanced. Then, we fought a very solid Batbusters team that had us beat on the first day but couldn’t close us out. Our girls fought into the last inning and pulled off a walk-off in our first meeting. Now, in the semi-finals, we are in our last inning, facing a 4-1 deficit, all 4 runs being unearned. That is a tough pill to swallow and we didn’t look like we had what we needed still in us. But, one AB at a time it started. We got two on, no outs and Maddy Nobles picks this moment to flex and bomb her second homer in as many tourneys, and it couldn’t have been bigger. We are now at 4-4.
We end up loading the bases in the same inning, one out. They call time to chat on the mound. Charlotte is coming up. I know this kid is a very good bunter and I’m thinking about squeezing for the win. I ask her if she can push the ball up the first base line far enough to score her. She’s like, “if that’s what you want me to do…” Umpires calls for everyone to play, and as she is walking away I said, I’m not sure yet. Hang on and I give u a sign.
I swear, we both stared at each other for a good minute that felt like a time warp for an hour. My gut was screaming at me to have her swing away. This kid has been on a tear over the last couple/few tourneys. She has been in one of those positive bubbles of seeing pitches so well and getting the barrel on it…a lot. I sided with my gut, gave her green light to swing away and she launched an epic walk off grand slam to RC that was a moment none of us there will forget, esp one-eight who mashed a ball to send us to the finals.
We ended up in 2nd place. A tight game that was 2-2 up until the last few minutes. They managed to fist a single into left to score two, and we couldn’t answer in the next frame. Exhausted, we took runner up but they all knew this was a defining tourney that marked them for perseverance, no quit, and a resiliency that is now part of them moving forward. Legacy is next and we have a much more complete roster with us.
Rest up…more memories are loading for this coming weekend.
