The radKIDS program and DARE program is ran over several weeks during the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy, which is taught by certified radKIDS’ and DARE Instructor Officer Eric Mericle. The radKIDS training takes one week to complete which is approximately 10 hours of training. The ages for the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy is for 5 - 7 year olds in a morning session, and 8-9 year olds in an afternoon session. Registration for the Optimist Safety City Summer Academy takes place the first full week of April ( Mon. – Fri. ) each year by calling the Optimist Safety City between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Registering early in the registration process is recommended since limited class slots fill up quickly. After registering by phone, a confirmation form will be sent out along with other forms that parents will have to have completed and signed, and bring with them the first day of class. The Optimist Safety City also has spring field trips available during the school year for any pre-school or elementary school that wishes to take advantage of this opportunity. Selective components of the radKIDS Program is presented during the field trips, which includes riding bikes and going through a fire training smoke house. The Optimist Safety City also has selective radKIDS presentations that can be done at the schools in the City of Lima upon request, as well as the full radKIDS Program in those City of Lima schools that have the time it takes to complete the full program, and has the facilities available to conduct the extensive hands on training that’s required for the full radKIDS Program.

The second week of the Safety City Summer Academy! We had great weather and a lot of fun! Thank you to all of the children who came! You all did an amazing job and I am so proud of all of you!! On the days we rode bikes we had a sprinkler out for them to ride through to beat the heat, or as Inspector Warren said, “The car wash”😂. Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents, family, and friends for taking the time out of your day to bring them to and from these classes! Thank you to my middle school and high school helpers for spending a week of your summer helping me! And thank you to the West Ohio Food Bank, McDonald's, and Westgate Entertainment Center for all the snacks, cookies, and pizza for graduation day!

The first week of the 2026 Safety City Summer Academy! What a great week we had with some awesome children!! They worked hard and learned so many valuable safety lessons to help keep them safe! We want to thank all the parents, family members, and friends who helped get them to and from these classes. We had great weather and hope they all had fun! We even had a visit from Officer Bob Butler during graduation!
I also want to thank all of my middle and high school helpers ! You are a big part of the Summer Academy and without you it would not be what it is! Thank you for volunteering a week of your summer vacation to spend it with us!
A huge thank you goes out to McDonald's for the cookies, Westgate Entertainment Center for the pizzas for my helpers, and to the West Ohio Food Bank for all the snacks you gave for the children! You all are amazing partners!

Officer Eric here. I wanted to thank all of the schools, staff, and students who took time out of their day to come to Safety City for a field trip this year. Inspector Warren, Inspector Shawn, and I had so much fun with all of you! We hope you learned about staying safe but most of all we hope you had fun! Thank you and have a great summer!!

Today the Bath Local Schools came out to Safety City for a field trip. This is the last field trip of 2026. The students and staff were so much fun to have here! Thank you for coming out to spend the day with us! We had a lot of fun and can’t wait to see you all back here next year!!

Today we had classes from Heritage Elementary School and WOW they were ready to go the minute they got off the bus. They learned a lot about safety and the rain held off for them to ride bikes! Thank you for coming out and we can’t wait to see you all again!!

This afternoon St. Gerard Catholic School came out to Safety City for safety lessons and to ride bikes! This was an awesome day and we had a lot of fun with you all! Thank you for coming out and we hope to see you all again soon!!
