The West Virginia boys struck Maine gold last night! William put the hammer down on This beautiful chevron chested boar! Perfect heart shot made for easy tracking 10 yards from the bait piled up just what we like to see! First time to Maine first time bear hunting first bear and what a trophy he is! Let’s see what night 2 brings tonight….. congrats William he’s sure going to look good as a life size mount!

Koy and his dad Craig had been at their lease in Kansas for the long Labor Day weekend chasing whitetails for the early youth season waiting for one of their shooter bucks to make an appearance but with temps in the 100s they eluded them. Hauling butt back home to Mass then up to Maine to hunt with me they missed Monday and wouldn’t you know it a bear came out at their site I had them going to hunt! Tuesday came with a bear coming in early morning then again Wednesday doing the same and then again on our way to the stand! This was beginning to turn into a game of catch me if you can…. the playing field was set this was clearly a game of chess not checkers. Thursday I told them Wer going in earlier then normal just in case one tried slipping in that early again. Knowing it would be a long sit they was up for the challenge. High winds all afternoon had me skeptical they would move early as the hours past I knew if we had a chance it was going to be last light. 2 bears came from behind them and circled the down wind side of the stand with 20 minutes left. Finally one committed to the site and as Koy went to shoot his gun wouldn’t go off so racking another shell it tried to double feed a round having one already in the pipe! His dad quickly and quietly got it sorted out and Koy put his shot on the broadside bear! As we was pulling onto the dirt road about a mile and half away with about 10 minutes left we heard the kaboooom! With only one a few spots of blood at the bait we commenced to look in small circles looking for general direction it had went. After striking out with any more blood I made the decision to call in my favorite tracker Susanne Hamilton large game blood tracking and Fritzi! Backing out and waiting for her 2 hour trek to us would only help us at this point and soon as we got there we went right to the bear within 120 yards of the bait Susanne seeing eyes at about 15 yards with the first encounter we didn’t get shot! Deciding a little more time we backed out and gave it another hour. Back in the track we went another 70-80 yards before finding the bear very sick and laying down initially I had thought it was dead but Susanne was pretty sure it was still alive and she was right! As I approached closer the bear tried to get up firing it rolled and began to get up again so I fired again that time it hit the ground but immediately grabbed the tree was attempting to climb so I put another one in its back! The hugs and celebration commenced we had together as a team once again made another hunters dream come true. Congratulations again Koy and Craig welcome to the world of bear hunting in Maine…. My motto has alway been come as clients leave as family and I have no doubt we have now developed a life long relationship with koy and Craig and can’t wait for future adventures! Thanks again for choosing us to hunt with for your first bear and what a beauty she is! And big big thank you for always making time for me in this crazy hunting world we live in Susanne!

Last night Tonya got us started out on the right foot for week 2 with this beautiful 139lb dry sow! Perfect heart shot made for easy tracking especially when the hunter can still see the bear from the stand…. She had been bear hunting 2 other times with other outfitters with no sitings at all so I made sure she was going to get an opportunity. Love it when we can break in a brand new bait! Congrats again Tonya on your first of many Maine black bear!

Very surprised my 3 hunters didn’t see a bear last night. My cell cams was going off like crazy never seen that much bear movement before dark all at once! Soaking rain today will be a challenge I hope the hunters are up for it!
